  1. Here's a list of 39 ex-Mets who were active in 2005 but, as far as I know, have not yet seen big league action in 2006. If anybody knows of any of these guys appearing in the majors in 2006, please let me know: Manny Alexander Vic Darensbourg Brian Daubach Kane Davis Octavio Dotel John Franco Matt Ginter Mike Hampton Lenny Harris Felix Heredia Richard Hidalgo Jason Anderson Kaz Ishii Dae-Sung Koo Al Leiter Luis Lopez Mike Matthews C. J. Nitkowski Hideo Nomo José Offerman John Olerud Juan Padilla Manny Aybar Bill Pulsipher Steve Reed Desi Relaford Rey Sanchez José Santiago Scott Strickland Shingo Takatsu Eric Valent Gerald Williams Paul Wilson Carlos Baerga James Baldwin Ricky Bottalico Alberto Castillo Roger Cedeño Jaime Cerda
  2. He didn't make that Oswalt trade because the Orioles backed out, and refused to include Tejada. Once Tejada was off the table, the Astros were no longer interested in dealing Oswalt. Not Omar's fault at all.
  3. If a team gets hot in October, it can win a World Series. If a team is cold in October, it can have an early playoff exit. In October, the Mets may be hot, they may be cold, or, more likely, they'll be somewhere in-between. Right now, in the middle of August, they're cold. Nothing to worry about. They may very well be hot again in October. This recent spell won't have any impact two months from now, unless everyone is nursing secret injuries that will need more than two months to heal.
  4. Oswalt wasn't available. Trading Nady was a mistake. I don't see any contradiction there.
  5. No, Nady's not the key to the season. But we may end up regretting his absense in October.
  6. I understand the urge to want to merge OBP and SLG, but adding them together does seem overly simplistic.
  7. I haven't fully embraced these new numbers either. (I know that I would have loved all of these stats when I was a teenager.) I think your math is a little bit off on Babe Ruth's slugging percentage. The .690 means he averaged 69 total bases for every 100 at bats. (6/9 would be .667.) As for OPS, it's not a percentage, it's the sum of two percentages. I never understood the rationale behind that, other than that's it's an easy way to look at two percentages at once. The .900, though, doesn't mean 90 per cent of anything.
  8. The New York Post is saying today that Gomez is the next Willie Mays. That would be nice, if true.
  9. Well, I just looked it up: http://norfolktides.com/team/index.php?autoload=teamstats_pitching&team_id=568 His ERA is 17.05. That's not too bad, is it?
  10. Has Oliver Perez pitched for Norfolk yet? How's he doing there? Anyone know?
  11. And now a word from Bobby Valentine
  12. No strong feelings about it. I won't pay to go see it, mostly because it's an Oliver Stone movie. If it's eventually on HBO I might watch it. But I might not. I didn't click on any of the poll choices because none of them involved maybe watching it when it's available for free. (Or, in the case of HBO, on a channel I'm paying for regardless.)
  13. That would allow Paul to sleep with all of the Mets wives.
  14. Johnny Dickshot wrote: It wasn't that hard to follow, was it? Now Hojo may have enuf cash to send his kid to school after the summer and prolly doesn't "need" his job, but I don't know how many of us could take 3 days off at the risk of getting fired, get fired, and then pat ourselves on the back for good parenting. I think (and if I had more money, I'd feel this way even more strongly) that I wouldn't want to work for a company that wouldn't let me take a couple of days off for a personal family matter, and that I would risk getting fired. If it's important to HoJo's son that his dad be there, then HoJo should be there. Especially since I doubt that he needs the AAA hitting instructor job in order to make ends meet.
  15. He left to attend some kind of athletic event that his son was participating in. He had asked for permission, was denied it, and went anyway. (I would have done the same thing HoJo did. Family comes first.)
  16. Wow. Of all the names listed above, I've only heard of two of them: Dale Ernhardt and Kyle Busch. I think to appreciate a spoof of NASCAR I'd probably have to know something about NASCAR, and clearly I don't know anything about NASCAR, other than that it involves cars.
  17. Good point. I wouldn't have gone to see it if my kids hadn't asked to go. I enjoyed it, but I'm certainly not the target audience. My nine-year-old son enjoyed it a lot. He's too old to be scared by it but not to old to think it's beneath him. My five-year-old daughter was frightened by it, but in the good way: she was riveted but not disturbed.
  18. Maybe. I'm all for letting go of superstition. But the numismatics can still argue that, while a 22 may not ensure a win, it's so far been impossible to win without one.
  19. Lost in all the chatter about the Nady deal is the fact that this leaves the Mets without a player wearing uniform number 22. The Mets have never won a World Series without a number 22 leading the way. What number does Ricky Ledee wear? And can we pin our hopes on Ricky Ledee?
  20. Took the kids to see Monster House this weekend. It was a fun, entertaining movie. It reminded me of the Stephen King short stories that I used to enjoy. (And I think they inserted a little nod to Stephen King during the basement scene. At least, that's how I interpreted it.) I think if this movie was done with live actors, it would have come across as pretty stupid. But with an animated movie you tend to expect less plausibility, and that helped in this case. A lot of famous voices in this film. I only recognized two of them, although some of the ones I failed to recognize should have been very familiar to me. (I had no idea who was in this movie when I went, and the credits didn't appear until the end of the film.)
  21. They're rerunning this show on Friday night, August 11, if anyone missed it the first time around.
  22. He attended a game at Shea earlier this year, and Chris Cotter interviewed him on SNY for a minute or two. Seemed like a nice kid.
  23. Wow, I'm not winning this game, I don't think. 20 starts for Bannister? 22 homers for Beltran?
  24. More panic button pressing. Reserve? Or Reverse?
  25. Willie Mon-tan-yez!
