He signed with the Phillies on March 2, 2019. (That was a pivotal day in my personal life, it just so happens! And not because of Bryce Harper or the Phiilies.)
-
What was it that the Dodgers did with Ohtani, to make it so his contract would come with less of a luxury penalty? I'm wondering if maybe the Mets might be able to sign Montgomery or Snell to a one-year deal with deferred money or something similar, which would prevent the contract from costing the estimated $70 million for 2024.
-
I only got eight out of nine today, but I'm pretty sure I got gypped. For Played in Negro Leagues/Played Outfield Min. 1 Game, I chose Hank Aaron. I can't see why that would have been rejected.
-
Well, if Montgomery or Snell would really cost $70 million this year, I can understand them turning to Tylor Megill instead. I guess all we can do is hope for the best, but to expect the Mets.

The Daily News is taking this personally, it seems. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2024/20240222_NYDN_02.jpg>

Will Sammon, The Athletic wrote: If the Mets were going to agree to any extension with catcher Francisco Alvarez soon, it would probably make the most sense after the season starts. That's because of the ramifications any such agreement ahead of the season would have on payroll. Since they are over the final luxury tax threshold, the Mets face stiff penalties, essentially paying a 110 percent hit on a player's annual average value. So extending a player like Alvarez now would mean a higher salary number for the competitive balance tax and one that they'd be paying a 110 percent penalty on.

LIVE FROM STOCKHOLM! 2023 TABLOID COVER DERBY!
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
A Boy Named Seo wrote: THEY DON'T GOT IT was a #9 seed. What's the lowest seed to have won the Tabloid Cover Derby?? Wonderful, as always, Grimm, thank you! Our 2017 winner, GOD OF BLUNDER, was a number 12 seed. 2019's winner, STREAKERS, was a number 11. THEY DON'T GOT IT is actually the third number 9 seed to win, following 2018's MIDNIGHT BADNESS and last year's MISERY. -
Tabloid Cover Derby IX is now completed, and the Daily News has regained the crown after four consecutive losses to Newsday, which had dethroned the News after it had won the first four competitions. 2023 CHAMPION COVER THEY DON'T GOT IT New York Daily News, May 16, 2023. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/THEYDONTGOTIT.png> This year's winning cover arrived in Stockholm in a unique manner... it was dropped from outer space! Early this morning, it was jettisoned from the International Space Station where it splash-landed in the Stockholms Ström (the Stream of Stockholm) less than a kilometer away from the Royal Palace! http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/spacestation.jpg> The ceremony to unveil the winning cover was held on the streets of Stockholm and, for the first time, attended by two reigning monarchs. Sweden's Carl XVI Gustaf was joined by King Friday XIII, on a diplomatic mission from the Land of Make Believe. They were joined by Mister Met, CPF receptionist and reality show star Maja as well as the ghost of Swedish actress Greta Garbo. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/ceremony2023.jpg> As is customary, the winning cover is now on display in the lobby of the Kran Pool Forum Internationella Huvudkontoret, the CPF's International Headquarters. After the ceremony, Maja changed her clothes and returned to her post at the reception desk. Since her divorce last year from the ghost of Dean Martin, she has been seen with the ghost of Milton Berle, although both deny that they have any romantic relationship. In the foreground, we see 2023's Intern of the Year, Lucia-Hildur. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/lobby_2023.jpg> The winning cover is once again available as a shower curtain! You can get a THEY DON'T GOT IT shower curtain of your own at the CPF Gift Shop. Show your membership card for a 15 per cent discount! http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/shower_curtain2023.jpg> Last year's winner, MISERY, has joined its predecessors on display at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where the seven covers are protected around the clock by an armed member of the Swedish Royal Guard. The exhibit, Tabloid Omslagsderby Mästerskapsgalleri, is once again sponsored by the Slate and Gravel Corporation of Bedrock. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/ArtMuseum2023.jpg> As a result of their appearance on the winning cover, Mets outfielders Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte will share a gigantic box of Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat. Because he was also on the second-place cover, Nimmo will also receive a copy of the Tabloid Cover Derby Home Game, available for sale wherever deeply unpopular toys and games are sold. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/gigantic_rice.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/home_version.png> Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Tabloid Cover Derby! We'll return for a tenth year of voting in November 2024! http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/brackets_2023_006.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_01.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_03.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_04.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_05.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_02_06.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_01.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_03.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_04.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_05.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_06.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_07.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_03_08.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_04_01.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_04_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_04_03.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_04_04.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_05_01.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_05_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2023/2023_06_01.jpg>

I'm surprised at how few White Sox pitchers had 200 strikeouts in a season. That was the only category I missed today. (Lamar Hoyt was incorrect.)

Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo are all poised to move up into semi-elite territory on some of the Mets' all-time offensive lists, with Francisco Lindor in the mix in a few categories as well. There are very few established Mets players on the pitching staff. Edwin Diaz is already among the all-time save leaders and he'll soon start making inroads in the games pitched category. GAMES Nimmo, Alonso, and McNeil all have a chance of reaching the Top Twenty this year. 1. Ed Kranepool 1,853 2. David Wright 1,585 3. Jose Reyes 1,365 4. Bud Harrelson 1,322 5. Jerry Grote 1,235 6. Pete Alonso 111 HOME RUNS The big question is, will Pete Alonso be with the Mets long enough to pass Darryl Strawberry? If this is his last season here, he should at least break his current tie with Howard Johnson and will likely pass Mike Piazza. Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor should reach the Top Twenty. 1.
