  1. Almost done. Three more games remain open for voting, and all three will close some time on Wednesday: Fri: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7522 Sat: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7527 Sun: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7532 Friday's and Sunday's losses are light in vote counts. I can understand why nobody has much enthusiasm for this! But, regardless, the Schaefer awards for September and for 2007 will soon be announced.

  4. NPR's All Things Considered discusses the Mets collapse: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14869673 ]All Things Considered, October 1, 2007 The collapse of the New York Mets, who were passed by the streaking Philadelphia Phillies during the last days of baseball's regular season, raises questions about the mental aspects of winning and losing. Psychology of Baseball author Mike Stadler discusses the mental aspects of winning and losing on the diamond with Robert Siegel.
  5. A sports psychologist on NPR today said that Glavine's attitude isn't what the fans like, but it's what makes athletes successful. They have to have the ability to shake off the losses and not dwell on them.
  6. And what makes you so sure that Dontrelle Willis is "available at a reduced price?" Get a catcher. Fix the bullpen. Trade Schoeneweis to Pittsburgh for a prospect. I don't know how Omar will get through the winter without you.
  7. How many hours per day do you spend Photoshopping Mets images?
  8. Zvon wrote: He should have stood there and howled at the moon, like I was doing at that moment. Well, now wouldn't THAT have been bizarre? I was watching that game with Greg Goossen, and I was too scared to go outside and howl.
  9. I guess I'd rather shake hands with Jerry Grote than watch TV with Greg Goossen.
  10. They get cast some time between the end of the regular season and before the playoffs start.
  11. I do sympathize, Valadius. If the Mets had collapsed in 1986 I would have been devastated. (I was 23 at the time.) I do hope that you see another Mets World Championship in your lifetime. Hell, I hope we see another one in Jack LaLanne's lifetime. (He just turned 93 the other day.) I remember seeing those dejected white-haired Cubs fans back in 2003 after they blew the NLCS to the Marlins. I was so glad I had 1986; I'd never be an old man fretting that I'd never seen my team win a World Series. 1986 has given me a peace of mind that helps me deal with 1999 or 2007.
  12. I've made it a lot harder to do that.
  13. BRAVES 11TH: ROGERS REPLACED DUNSTON (PITCHING); Williams doubled to left; Boone out on a sacrifice bunt (first unassisted) [Williams to third]; C. Jones was walked intentionally; Jordan was walked intentionally [C. Jones to second]; A. Jones walked [Williams scored, C. Jones to third, Jordan to second]; 1 R, 1 H, 0 E, 3 LOB. Mets 9, Braves 10. That was a miserable inning. I'm sure Rogers wasn't trying to not give up a grand slam. A grand slam is no more damaging than a walk in that situation. He had to be trying for a ground ball or a strikeout. He failed, but that doesn't make him a coward or a fool. He was put into a very tough situation when he was called on to issue two intentional walks. (Was Brian Jordan with two on that much scarier than Andruw Jones with the bases loaded? Can we petition to undo that second intentional walk somehow? If Larry Craig can try to withdraw his guilty plea, can we try to withdraw an intentional walk?)
  14. The three most popular lookups so far today are, in order: Tom Glavine, Jose Reyes, Willie Randolph. I haven't checked yet, but I'll bet some of those visitors have posted some angry comments.
  15. I don't think we'll be on the edges of our seats when it's time to announce the MVP winners next month. I'm sure the collapse (or should it be known as "The Collapse" instead?) has killed David's candidacy.
  16. Yeah, that really doesn't make sense. I've even heard (or read) some saying that Rogers was "cowardly" to issue that walk.
  17. Voting for the Mets Thursday night loss to the Cardinals will close on Tuesday morning. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7502
  18. The Mets broadcasters did an interesting in-game interview with Conti during the 2006 season in which he explained what it is he does. Unfortunately, I don't remember anything that he said! (But I do remember that it was interesting.)

  20. I think this is worse than that. I've just completed my 37th year as a Mets fan, and the only thing I recall that might be worse than this collapse was when the Mets traded Tom Seaver in 1977. And if I was an adult when the Mets traded Seaver I probably wouldn't have taken that as hard as I did. But, honestly, I can't say that I "hurt." I'm fine. Remember perspective. The Mets are entertainment. I'm disappointed that they failed to be entertaining this month, and more disappointed that I'll miss that October entertainment I had been looking forward to. But the Mets are not, or should not be, an overly important thing in our lives. Let's not wallow in pity or anger. Let's instead go about our days, and our lives.
  21. I think we all wanted to see him as the next Mookie Wilson, albeit with more overall talent. The smile, the speed, the enthusiasm. Well, we've learned that he's no Mookie Wilson. He pouts, he sulks, and he dogs it at times. He's also 24 and talented. He can be a star player for the next 15 years. If the Mets give up on him now they can very well regret it for many years to come. They don't need to unload him. They need to redeem him.
  22. I agree that it was more of a Mets loss than a Phillies win. But the Phillies did put heat on the Mets, enough heat to make the Mets play scared. So yes, they do deserve considerable credit. I'm rooting against them from here on in, unless they meet the Yankees. I'm in the Philadelphia media market, and I'd like to be able to stop hearing about the Phillies as soon as possible. The Cubs are close to the 100th anniversary of their last Worlds Championship. It would be a shame to end that tradition now. I think, right now, I'm rooting for Rockies and Indians in the World Series.
  23. I'd actually consider interviewing Lo Duca as a replacement for Willie Randolph next year.
  24. Yeah! I was thinking the same thing!
