  1. How about the thrilling race for the Mets 2009 home run title? We currently have David Wright and Gary Sheffield at 10, and Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy at 9. Fernando Tatis and Jeff Francoeur, with 7, can surge to the lead, as can Omir Santos or Angel Pagan, who have 6 each. This doesn't make your heart pound?
  2. I'm looking forward to watching the Phillies collapse.

  7. I don't know if you've heard (it's gotten attention in the Philadelphia area anyway) but Tony Danza will be teaching a high school course in an inner city Philadelphia school this year. It's for, of course, a reality show.
  8. BOX SCORE Maine 0.5 Thole 3 AHernandez 2 Francoeur 2
  9. Oliver Perez's contract still seems like a much bigger mistake.
  10. Be sure to cast some Schaefer votes!

  12. I'm really totally sick of Jerry Manuel. His contract expires after 2010, right? Of course, I'm hoping the Mets win the World Series in 2010, which would mean Jerry's return in 2011. But that's neither here nor there right now. Meanwhile, I walked away from the TV after the first inning. Now I'm glad I did. (It sure was nice seeing Carlos Beltran hit a home run, though. We should have seen that 20 more times this year.)

  14. I'd feel quite a bit more optimistic about next season, and, if this streak was accomplished with contributions from Reyes and Beltran and Maine and Delgado, I'd be wistful about what could have been.
  15. It's also possible that the Mets will bring in a one-year old guy to hold down first base for 2010. (That old guy may be Carlos Delgado, or not.) In which case, Davis would be more realistically aiming for 2011.
  16. Jeez, I forgot about this thing. The remaining Mexican is... Juan Acevedo.
  17. Rigo Beltran it is. One Mexican remaining, and he's a 1990's-era Mets pitcher.
  18. I have to confess that I would be terrible at this question. Except for the most prominent players, like Reyes or Delgado or Beltran or Santana, I have a very hard time remembering who's Mexican or Dominican or Puerto Rican or Venezuelan.
  19. Yes, they switched to those flag-within-the-insignia caps that all 30 teams wore. I expect we'll see the same tonight, or maybe for the whole weekend.
  20. Imagine if we had a baseball star named "Stephen America"? He'd be showered with pink hubcaps every Fourth of July!
  21. I mistyped, there are actually 9 Japanese-born Mets. Seven have been mentioned so far: Hideo Nomo, Kaz Matsui, Ken Takahashi, Masato Yoshii, Takashi Kashiwada, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Kaz Ishii. Two remain. Chuck Estrada was born in California. Mexicans named so far: Alex Trevio Armando Reynoso Elmer Dessens Karim Garcia Luis Ayala Oliver Perez Ricardo Rincon Three more. Two of them share a surname with other, non-Mexican Mets players.
  22. If you lived where I live, among Phillies fans, you wouldn't feel that way!
  23. True, the Mets need to go 11-11 the rest of the way to avoid 90 losses. (They just need to go 1-21 to avoid 100 losses.) The Phillies collapsing and missing the playoffs would be a wonderful finish to a lousy season. I don't expect it to happen, but I didn't expect 2007 either.
