  1. The only one I could have gotten off the top of my head was Gardenhire. When I found Rohr and Bochy, I thought, oh yeah, I knew that. Okay, who can name the eight who were born in Japan, or the ten who were born in Mexico?
  2. Yes, and yes. That concludes our Tobi Stoner-inspired trivia! Thank you for coming, and drive home safely!
  3. Yes, Gardenhire is the other German-born Met.
  4. Tobi Stoner is the second Met to have been born in Germany, and the fourth to have been born in Europe. Who was the other German-born Met? (This should be easy, I think.) And who were the other two? (One was born in France and the other in England.)
  5. After the Marlins swept the Mets, the Phillies lead is down to 5 games. Hopefully the Marlins will keep on winning, and the Mets will do some damage to the Phillies this weekend. I know, it's really unlikely that the Mets will hurt the Phillies, but wouldn't it be nice?

  7. Well, it's already been established (above) that he's not on the ball elsewhere. And he was with the Mets in April and May, when Gus Bell was there.
  8. I think Castillo, for what it's worth, is much more tradeable this winter than he was a year ago. There's one fewer season remaining on his contract, and he's coming off a better season. He'd probably still be a tough sell, but it's no longer unthinkable that someone might be willing to trade for him.
  9. I don't know if this is a first, but it's got to be a rarity: two players each getting more than 4 points: Totals for September 6, 2009 (6 votes) New York Mets 4, Chicago Cubs 2 NameTotal PointsPoints AwardedPlayer PerformanceMike Pelfrey29.454.91(W) 8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO.Daniel Murphy25.324.223-4, R, 3B, HR, 4 RBIBrian Schneider2.680.452-3Angel Pagan1.500.252-5, SO, SBLuis Castillo0.800.131-3, R, SODavid Wright0.250.040-4, R

  12. No, it's not a trivia question. (Well, I suppose it is, but not the kind where the asker has the answer.) It's a guy who has a ball with an unidentifiable signature on it.
  13. It could also be "Ted."
  14. Here's another clue: If Gus Bell is on the ball, then it must have been signed on or before May 21, 1962, because that's when Gus departed for Milwaukee. Which means we can rule out any players or personnel who arrived after that date.
  15. I got an e-mail from a long-time Mets fan who has a 1962 Mets autographed baseball. There's one signature he can't identify, though, and it has me stumped as well. It's the one below Jim Hickman and above Al Jackson. (It looks something like "A Cuthery") From looking at the other names on the ball, that he could identify, my correspondent has ruled out the following Mets: Casey Stengel Roger Craig Ray Daviault Jay Hook Sherman Jones Ken MacKenzie Bob Miller Herb Moford Bob Moorehead Chris Cannizarro Hobe Landrith Dave Hillman Craig Anderson Al Jackson Ed Bouchee Gil Hodges Felix Mantilla Jim Marshall Charlie Neal Gus Bell John Demerit Jim Hickman Frank Thomas Red Ruffing Rod Kanehl Roger Hornsby Red Kress Solly Hemus Any ideas?
  16. According to the Daily News this morning, there's a chance (although probably a very slim one) that both Reyes and Delgado will return to play for the Mets before the season ends.
  17. I assume because he's smart, he loves the game and he appreciates its history. Of course, there are many who fit that critera.

  22. I like Edgy's suggestions, but the unfortunate side effect of that would be that teams and their locations would become as fluid as they've become in the NFL. In St. Louis you swap the Cardinals for the Rams. In Baltimore you lose the Colts and get the Browns, who become the Ravens so that Cleveland can get new Browns. I think the same stuff has been going on in the NBA. (I was surprised recently to learn that the Hornets now play in New Orleans.)
  23. I have no sympathy for Shoeless Joe Jackson. The Hall of Fame, though, is such a mess already that I don't care whether or not he gets in. But, to Val's point, I think lifetime actually means "forever." I don't expect that Pete Rose will suddenly become eligible for Cooperstown after he dies. (Speaking of that... I was catching up on my Late Shows with David Letterman that I TiVoed while I was on vacation, and during a monologue from late July, Dave said something about how "it looks like Pete Rose might get reinstated." I was totally out of touch when that was taped, but I hadn't heard anything at all about that. Was there anything of substance behind whatever late night joke Letterman was setting up?)
