The third baseman will continue his attempt to return to the field this spring.“Through this entire rehab process, I have been driven to get back on the field as quickly as I can. That’s why I had the shoulder surgery and that’s why today I underwent back surgery to reduce the risk of further issues going forward,” Wright said in a statement released by the team. “With these two surgeries behind me, I hope to be able to put on a Mets uniform again as soon as possible. My desire to play is as strong as ever.”Wright underwent a laminotomy, a less invasive surgery that removes part of the arch of the vertebrae to try to take pressure off the vertebral canal.

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I am beginning to wonder if David is in his right mind.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 It's kind of sad, really. I hope Sandy doesn't make off-season decisions based on David Wright's desire to play.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Author Posted October 6, 2017 Any off-season decisions should be made under the assumption that David Wright will never play again, despite what doctors say or what David's level of desire is.If it turns out that he is able to play, then you either have a happy problem or an awkward or expensive situation, but it makes more sense to count him out than to count him in.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I think there are a few Sandy quotes suggesting that this is exactly how he views the situation.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I know we're not going to get it because the media doesn't bother to ask these questions and it's the offseason, but..was this elective? How elective? Was this suggested because "This may alleviate some of your pain caused by the stinosis?" Is it preventing pain or avoiding pain? Was this undergone with the intention of being able to get back on the field, or was it forced by the condition he's in? (I suspect the first)But we've had very few real details about Wright's condition. Sure, that's his private medical information, but that's not usually the case in sports. I feel like if the Mets were actually counting on him as part of the team, we'd know more. We don't know if he's having leg pain, walking pain. if it's more back pain or not. We'll get the trickles of "unrelated doctors" over the next few weeks.my googling suggests that this might be a helpful thing for Wright for the next few years, as it'll relieve the pressure and pinching but it does nothing to actually address the stenosis and whatever caused that will continue to press in. If that was some sort of genetic/medical fluke perhaps he can keep it at bay for a while, but if it was daily grind of baseball, maybe not? Or it if it was because of specific trauma (that collision at third base) he's at risk every time he's out there for a similar thing?
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 David's gonna be 35 in December. If he was and had been healthy, Sandy would shirley be looking at his successor anyway. Right? RIGHT???
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Author Posted October 6, 2017 Well, if David had been healthy and productive all along, he'd still be a guy with three years remaining on his contract, so I imagine that the Mets wouldn't be looking at getting someone else to play third base in 2018.

That's 21/38 3Bmen with at least 300 PAFlores is the guy you're happy to let fill in for a week or two here and there if your main guy is hurt, or against lefties occasionally.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Edgy MD wrote:.271 / .307 / .488 // .795Wilmer Flores. Is that his OPS or his fielding average? Wilmer is not a third baseman. He just isn't. If he plays anywhere, it's second or first.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I'm not sure why he should be moved to a position that requires more range, but sure.My thought, is that between him, Rivera, whatever Wright provides, Cecchini, and Evans, third base is not the weakness it's portrayed as.If I'm looking to add a full-time offensive player, my first priority is a leadoff-hitting second baseman. But obviously second and third are pretty interchangeable, with a lot of overlapping skills. We'll see.
