World Series ROOTING INTEREST

This World Series would have a great storyline if it just had the Cubs but it also has the Indians. Two long-suffering franchises. "Rookie of the Year" vs. "Major League." Wow.
Screw it, the Mets aren't in it. But someone has to win... who do you WANT to win?

This'll sound a little mean, maybe (and a few good friends are Northside-aligned), but the nasty little post-Mets-elimination elf inside me thinks it would be hilarious to watch Cubs fans watching Cleveland celebrate on the Wrigley infield.

I sometimes don't know heading into a 'neutral' World Series who I'm going to root for until several games in when I find myself pulling for one over the other.
I suspect in this case that I'm going to be pulling for the Cubs (so I voted that way in the poll) although not so much that I don't want to see them at least have to sweat for it.

Cubs are bidding to become only the second team to be eliminated by the Mets in the postseason one year and win the World Series the next. I'm going with that as my storyline of choice, though I have nothing against the Tribe and would be very happy on behalf of a friend who's been rooting for Cleveland since the days of Leon "Daddy Wags" Wagner.

Move over 1970 Orioles. You might have company in learning how to win from a Mets team that took you to school.

Yup. In theory, when the post-season started, I figured I would root for the Cubs.

But watching the NLCS made me realize I can't root for those smug bastards. I had to remind myself several times "Remember Utley. Remember Scoscia. Remember you hate the Dodgers." So I'll turn on the TV and see which way I start rooting and just go with it. Probably Cleveland.

1. It's been a long time.
2. I saw a Mets game at Wrigley and the Cubs fans were incredibly welcoming, even knowing I was rooting for the Mets. It's truly the friendly confines.
3. Giving David Wright the third base bag last year. Now, that's class.
4. My daughter is in Chicago and works near Wrigley. She's never cared for baseball, but it getting into it a bit this year.

But the Cubs can win one for Billy Williams.

I haven't checked all of them, but I suspect that the 1908 Cubs have no such still-living players.

I'm with the Indians...but I'd be fine with a Cubs win, too.

I live in relatively close proximity to Cub Land and have many Cub-fan friends. There have been more than a few peeps jumping on the bandwagon this year and last. It is hard to tell the difference between who the genuine long-suffering fans are and those who are just experiencing the Cubs for the first time now that they are built to succeed. I do have several childhood friends (thanks for keeping us in touch, Facebook!) that were Cubs fans then and are Cubs fans now...and I do hope the Cubs win it for them. But the swath of "new" Cubs fans were ready to host the World Championship flag on Opening Day and haven't shut up about it since.
