On Mets Hot Stove last night, they mentioned two Boras clients who did sign a contract that extended into the free agent years. Carlos Gonzalez was one, in 2011; I'm forgetting who the other guy was, but it was also in 2011. (It was a pitcher, I think.) So it can happen. If Matt Harvey really wants to stay, he can direct Boras to talk to the Mets. It's certainly a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing, but it's not impossible.

This is just a bs spring training story anyway. Of course Harvey is open to an extension if it pays well. duh.

Matt Harvey isn't a free agent for THREE MORE SEASONS. He's also a pitcher and pitchers get hurt. It would be irresponsible, given the current service time rules, to extend even just Thor, Harvey and deGrom right now. deGrom is a free agent in 2021. Syndergaard in 2022!

For example, Justin Verlander was the/a top pitcher in 2012. (going by rWAR) His next three years combined to be just a tick above average.

Price would've been worth it. and Kershaw.

Matt Harrison not so much.

Cueto pitched well those three years but seemingly fell apart halfway through last year.

Dickey and Kuroda probably aren't comps.

Gio Gonazalez was good the next three seasons but nothing special.

The pitchers that have long term extended success are a crap shoot. If we want to sign Harvey into

There's certainly value in locking up your guys long term, but I think we're at least a year or two away from needing to do that. Hell, we're not even up to buying out arb years yet. I'm extremely wary of predicting which pitchers are still going to be great in 2021.

It's nice that he's saying that, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I'll also believe it when I see it, but I'm not so skeptical here. Because of Harvey's TJ surgery , he's more susceptible to a major career threatening injury going forward than a pitcher with a relatively cleaner medical history. Maybe Harvey's considering that and playing the old risk-reward game inside his head.

Here's an awkward sentence from John Harper:

It's no secret Harvey likes the finer things in life, from the Maserati he was driving last season to the private jet package he said on a late-night TV show recently that he splurged on so he can fly to exotic locations around the world, presumably.

Of course, or certainly lease one. Harvey's not hangin' with
the Hyundai crowd. (nttawwH)

Cos we are living in a material world,
And Matty's a material girl.

I wonder if there is something about a Maserati that attracts douchy guys. I don't know if it's just coincidence, but in real life, it seems to me like a disproportionate number of douchy guys own Maseratis.

And I know guys who own Porsches, and other sports cars, and these guys have never really struck me as unusually douchy (though once you drive a sports car, I think there is a base level of douchiness that is hard to shake. Just my opinion). So I don't think it's sports cars in general. Just the Maserati guys.

I don't know. I don't know the first thing about sports cars. Would be interested to see if anyone else sees this trend and if there is any reason for it.

Matt Harvey makes any car he drives douchy by extension but yeah, Maseratis, like Escalades, are for douchebags.

Matt Harvey is a male Anna Benson. I wouldn't sign him early for anything until we see what kind of character he turns out to be. Or not to be.
