Oh, I'm not getting my hopes up, because I don't buy for a SECOND that this is likely.

I'm thinking that they're pitching him something like what his AAV asking price would be for a 5-to-6 year deal, or maybe ever so slightly more or less. Others will likely offer more per year for a pillow jobber, or give him the fifth year. Once Upton goes, he'll go, and fast.

OE: What Rubin's second guy says, IOW. Yay, timing!

Agreed. My thinking on this:

1. Seems pretty clear that the Mancuso report is wrong. Everyone else is saying it's not true.

2. I have no idea why the Phils and Braves would be in on Cespedes. Not saying that they're not, but these guys are rebuilding. A short term deal for an expensive outfielder is just strange.

3. Why would the O's offer 5 years when everyone else is discussing a short term deal? I wonder if someone on the O's leaked this to get Chris Davis's attention.

I'll keep hoping, but I think anything significant is a long shot.

Ceetar! We agree on something!

Ha. It was bound to happen at least once this offseason.

the clue here i think is how no one seems to be nailing down a firm number for the 'offer'. and generally you don't hear about offers that just sit there for hours/days unaccepted.

In New York City, where are you going to find those?

*to be eligible for your 72 virgins, you must blow up Yankee stadium.

Re the Orioles:

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reported that the offer is in the five-year, $75 million to $90 million range.

If true (a big if), that's $15-$18mm AAV, which is a lot lower than you'd expect. While I wouldn't want him for 5 years, that's not a back-breaking deal for the O's by any stretch.

If he's not coming back to the Mets, a non-Yankee AL East team is the ideal scenario.

Ken Rosenthal has the answer:

I don't think it would take 5 years. I think 4 years probably gets it done.

Love this part:

The Mets should have the money. They have spent a combined $35.5 million on four free agents this offseason – less than the Marlins, less than the Rockies, less than the Athletics – and made a trade for second baseman Neil Walker that was essentially cash-neutral. Their payroll, including pending arbitration cases, does not figure to increase much beyond where it was at the end of last season – about $110 million.

By contrast, the payroll of the Mets’ World Series opponent – the Royals – figures to top $130 million. The Royals play in Kansas City, a low-revenue market in the Midwest. The Mets play in New York, a high-revenue market in the nation’s media capital. What’s wrong with this picture?

Mets officials bristle at criticism that they do not spend enough money. Well, they hear such criticism because they ... do ... not ... spend ... enough money.

Actually, I take back the 4 years part. I have no idea what will get it done. I think the Upton contract proved that no one seems to have any clue what is really going on.
