How many different players have hit home runs as Mets? You all get 1 guess, if anyone looks it up they're disqualified. Closest to actual number wins. Will reveal answer after sufficient guesses populate thread. Winner gets an apple.

Go!

There have about 1,000 Mets, A third or so have been pitchers. There are September call-ups and cups of coffee in there. I'm guessing 341.

From all those baseball card threads I've started over the years that show one-time Mets in the uniforms of their current opponent, I'd say that about half of all Mets are pitchers and that about a third of all baseball players ever are fringe pitchers. Fringe pitchers because major league quality pitching is incredibly hard to find and even then, pitchers blow out their arms at an alarming rate. I'd guess that pitching is about as hazardous as being an NFL running back.

Enjoy a red delicious victory, Ceetar. The correct answer is 401. Stay tuned for the more difficult Part II.

My strategy -- which I pondered on for a lengthy amount of time (like maybe 30 seconds) -- was to figure that:
-- 60% of the 1,000 career Mets are/were position players = 600
-- 1/4 of those were call-ups, short-timers, or otherwise shitty hitters who never HR'd = 450
-- and then threw in 20 for the estimated number of hurlers who managed to hurl one or more over the fence at some point = 470

Upon further review (like 60 seconds later) I realized that the 60% guesstimate was likely too high - although I probably still wouldn't have shaved it as low as 401

My strategy was the average of the three posts ahead of me. Came pretty close.

Interestingly, Michael Conforto was not only Met #1,000 but also the 400th to homer.

My strategy is to let you guys make your picks, wait for the answers to be posted, and then look real informed and intelligent to my brothers when I quiz them on this.

The average of everyone's guesses is 388.23 which is good, but Ceetar was still closer.
