Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Pick 25 guys and build yourself a post-season roster. The outline below isn't necessarily what I'm advocating (so please don't argue with the table), just a snapshot of sorta where things sit now, with the injury to Uribe giving Johnson a bit o' boost. Some guys appear at more than one position group starter and reliever, or infielder and outfielder but the assumption in the table that the team goes with five starters (one being the emergency starter), seven relievers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders. Obviously you don't have to build your team that way and neither do the Mets. PlAnyhow, pretty cool that the Mets are holding 33 players that they'd like to carry. Gonna be some painful choices.PositionStartingPitchersReliefPitchersCatchersInfieldersOutfieldersPrettySecuredeGromHarveySyndergaardColonFamiliaClippardReedRoblesTorresd'ArnaudPlaweckiWrightDudaMurphyFloresTejadaCespedesGrandersonConfortoGood Side OfThe Bubble=#FFFF00]Niese=#FFFF00]GilmartinAvarez=#FFFF00]Johnson=#FFFF00]CuddyerLagaresBad Side OfThe Bubble=#FF8000]Matz=#FF8000]GoeddellVerrettMatzParnell=#FF8000]Recker=#FF8000]Uribe=#FF8000]JohnsonNieuwenhuisYoungOnly InEmergency=#FF0000]VerrettStauffer=#FF0000]O'FlahertyStauffer=#FF0000]Monell=#BF8000].=#FF0000]CampbellHerrera=#FF0000]Campbell=#BF8000].
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I voted for Uribe assuming he'll be healthy.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Matz is a lock and not on the bubble.I saw that Rubin suggested today that Niese could take the spot of Gilmartin in the bullpen.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Keith said on the radio a couple of days ago that Matz would be the fourth starter.

Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I think calling it "a snapshot of sorta where things sit now" invites a response when it is clearly in error.Anyway, I voted for my 25 choices. I like the idea of Niese in the bullpen, and I think Uribe will make it back for the NLDS. Last guy I left off was Carlos Torres.I'm curious who voted for the Mets to not carry a backup catcher (or is that Goeddel's role?). I like aggressive strategy.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I take Niuewy over Young and Goeddel over Torres, not that that's a biggie.I'm thinking I must have inadvertently left off a starter or two because it was easier than I thought.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 26, 2015 Author Posted September 26, 2015 Goeddel has gotten some support. Torres is in need of some work, I guess. He needs to prove he's healthy.Surprisingly, Johnson has been named on all 11 ballots, topping Uribe (7 votes) decisively. Uribe may be the more inspiring player, but in the cold light of day, voters not only see the health issue, but the versatility Johnson brings, not to mention the left-handed stick off the bench, which'll come in handy, seeing as they are unlikely to find room for Nieuwenhuis. And frankly, he'd come in handy even if they can, seeing as he gives a team more contact and consistency.Johnson is proof that every team could use two Daniel Murphys.d'Arnaud has been named on 11 ballots and Plawecki 10, while neither Recker nor Monell have gotten a single vote. So one of you maniacs wants to head to the playoffs with single catcher.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 26, 2015 Author Posted September 26, 2015 There's some pretty solid consensus developing, based on the votes thus far.The next thing to decide then is which of the six starting pitchers you're planning to carry gets held back in emergency duty/bumped to the pen.STARTERS (6)Bartolo Colon 12Jacob deGrom 12Matt Harvey 12Steven Matz 12Noah Syndergaard 12Jon Niese 9NON-STARTERS (1)Tim Stauffer 0.....RELIEVERS (5)Tyler Clippard 12Jeurys Familia 12Addison Reed 12Hansel Robles 10Erik Goeddel 7.RELIEVED (6)Sean Gilmartin 6Logan Verrett 3Carlos Torres 1Bobby Parnell 1Dario Alvarez 1Eric O'Flaherty 0CATCHERS (2)Travis d'Arnaud 12Kevin Plawecki 11BELLY-SCRATCHERS (2)Anthony Recker 0Johnny Monell 0INFIELDERS (7)David Wright 12Lucas Duda 12Daniel Murphy 12Ruben Tejada 12Kelly Johnson 12Wilmer Flores 11Juan Uribe 8FUTILITY INFIELDERS (2)Eric Campbell 0Dilson Herrera 0.....OUTFIELDERS (5)Yoenis Cespedes 12Curtis Granderson 12Michael Conforto 12Juan Lagares 12Michael Cuddyer 11LEFT-OUTFIELDERS (2)Kirk Nieuwenhuis 3Eric Young, Jr. 0...

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 Looks like the voters refuse to make the hard choice between Uribe and Johnson (and Lagares and Cuddyer), and instead decide to brave it with an 11-man staff, including only five experienced relievers.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 In the Postseason Musings thread, I said that I wanted an 11-man pitching staff and the following roster: DeGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz, Familia, Clippard, Reed, Robles, Colon, Niese, Goeddel, d'Arnaud, Plawecki, Duda, Murphy, Johnson, Flores, Tejada, Uribe, Wright, Cespedes, Conforto, Granderson, Lagares, Cuddyer. If there's a 12th pitcher, I'd add Verrett and probably give him Uribe's spot, now that Juan is questionable. If it's' still 11 pitchers, and Uribe can't play, then I'd make the bench a little more left-handed and select Nieuwenhuis.I know we're not supposed to disagree with the all-knowing chart, but I'm with Gwreck. Everything I've heard and read indicates that Matz is expected to be on the postseason roster and in the rotation as the fourth starter.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I voted Young, based on Gelbs report and Gary's comment. No if Uribe is healthy but I think that Terry wants the option.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Who didn't vote for Wilmer? 'Splain please, Lucie. Who else would play short in a crucial series?Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I voted for young. I like having a guy like that when you're down a run in the 8th and a slow guy gets a leadoff single.

Somewhere between 1 and 4 people thought the Mets should be playing the series with fewer than 25 players.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 That's probably not the best idea.Although the Mets did get through the entire 1986 postseason only using 22 players.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Gilmartin over Goeddel - can't have Niese as the only LHP in the pen; andNieuhenheis over Uribe - LHed bat off the bench and Uribe too banged upMatz over Torres - i'm not sure why this is even a thing

Think were will at least 1 time late in a game, we'll wish we had a Dave Roberts in the dugout to pinch run and swipe second.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I picked Recker over Plawecki only because I'm sure Reck has a HUGE home run in him that he hasn't hit yet.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I may want to rethink that.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Recker is very definitely below Plawecki on the depth chart.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 Gilmartin pulling into a late tie with Goeddel. It's good to be a lefty.Battles among the relievers on the bubble may be some of the biggest drama of the remaining games. This is really interesting. Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 it's tough to make a case for Lagares over several guys in the right column. Basically, you're looking at a defensive replacement who wouldn't also be your 1st pinch hitter or 1st pinch runner.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 And yet all 20 voters have gone for him.I think, while none of us perhaps want to make the argument, there might be something to be said for the idea that a guy has been in the trenches with you all year, and it might undercut the whole esprit d'corps to toss him aside now, as much of a luxury or a redundancy has he may have become. Applies to Niese also. And hey, the world needs redundancies too.But I do imagine he'll be the pinch-runner that Young might have been had their been room for him.
