Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I mean, what reverberations? This trade leak totally upended ebrything -- word out now that Gomez is hurt, that the Mets are looking beyond Flores and Wheeler and possibly Lagares (!)In the meantime we still have a club to improve. Assuming they want a center fielder who hits home runs, can lead off and bats righthanded, I think they're SOL. Other center fielders from noncontenders are kinda weak - best I could come up with was Charlie Blackmon of Colorado -- some power and wheels, but bats lefthanded and poorly vs. LHP, and not quite the same guy away from Coors.Michael Borne is a trainwreck and has at least $26 million coming to him.If we go off center fielders that means goodbye for now to Conforto and continuing to struggle with a Kirk-Lagares platoon. Of that group, looks like Jay Bruce (LH) or Yoenis Cespendes (RH) are the best bet, both guys have 17 HRs and the same 125 OPS+, Bruce more OBP-y than Cespedes. We could also turn attention to SS which would bring me back to Reyes! What next??
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Reyes and Carlos Gonzalez from the Rockies?Flores, Niese, Nimmo, Montero enough? I don't know.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Montero 'had soreness' in his last workout. so..Wonder how hardcore Sandy can be. Staunchly walk away from deal based on hip, and now that it's been so blown up, is anyone else going to match that offer? Can he come back tomorrow morning with like "fine, if you really want to deal him, you can have just Wheeler?"
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 There may not be anything forthcoming. But I have no doubt they're working hard to close a plan B.If they don't, Sandy will tell how they're continuing to explore the post-deadline waiver trade market. And hate will rain from the skies.

But I think ego/insult would trump desperation on the Brewers' part in this particular instance. I hate to make the boring, safe bet, but I think they're done. And judging from the guys who make it through waivers, well, there doesn't appear to be the payroll flexibility for Sandy to make a significant post-deadline move.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I'm in agreement with most. I'd be surprised at any further (significant) action by Sandy and the Mets.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 "We'll be getting Michael Cuddyer back, and that's like adding a superstar in trade. He got a ball through the infield MORE THAN ONCE already this season, and it's only July."

Those are still various levels of 'IF' though.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 ESPN's Mark Simon suggests Rajai Davis of Detroit, who has very good speed, a positive 3-position glove and, well, he owns his own bats.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Yeah, that's sorta Lagares without the upside. Likely comes cheap, but arguably makes things more crowded but not necessarily better. He knocks Campbell off the roster, but maybe wouldn't play much more unless Terry fell in love with him and used him as an excuse to knock Granderson out of the leadoff spot. You talk to me about Detroit, and I see J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes and my eyes wander not toward Rajai Davis.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Well he's riding his horse all over Juan+Kirk's 70something OPS
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Upon further review, I kinda like the Davis idea-- MLB-average bat, plus-plus speed and glove. Another incremental improvement, making the lineup and bench longer. Plus, local-ish guy (CT).
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Is there any doubt that this little hatchet job is the doing of one Scott Boras?Milwuakee reporter says Mets backed off Gomez deal due to money, not medicalshttp://metsblog.com/metsblog/milwuakee-reporter-says-mets-backed-off-gomez-deal-due-to-money-not-medicals/Fits the Mets narrative and pretends his client's injury -- and declining production -- isn't a factor.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I'm not against another bullpen arm if one can be had. I'm not sure who that arm is or where they come from, but with Clippard replacing Mejia instead of being another option, the pen is not too much better off than a week ago.The seventh inning scares me...especially on Colon/Niese days.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Mets Guy in Michigan wrote:Is there any doubt that this little hatchet job is the doing of one Scott Boras?Milwuakee reporter says Mets backed off Gomez deal due to money, not medicalshttp://metsblog.com/metsblog/milwuakee-reporter-says-mets-backed-off-gomez-deal-due-to-money-not-medicals/That doesn't make much sense. The Mets knew what Gomez was owed. If that was an issue, it would have been mentioned up front, not when everything else was in place. Besides, next year Colon comes off the books (I assume they won't re-sign him), which means Gomez's salary is actually a decrease in payroll.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Joel Sherman is now twitting that he has a "gut feel" that the Mets will now obtain lefty hitting Josh Reddick before the deadline. I wonder how fast that will go viral? He has played some center, but primarily has been a corner outfielder.Later
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I don't see gut feelings on Reddick anywhere in Sherman's feed.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Joel Sherman ? @ Joelsherman1After canceling the Gomez trade, I have a gut feeling the #Mets are going to land Josh Reddick before the deadlineLater
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Not seeing any of that in his feed (or anywhere else), either.I mean, I'd take it and like it. I like his bat, his game, AND his careless whispering.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Our previously season-long strong bullpen is suddenly misbehaving big time. The fortifying move of bringing in Clip-Art now looks like a fortuitous act of desperation.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Ken Rosenthal is talking about a Wheeler for Jay Bruce deal "possibly with one other player involved" (doesn't say which way).< 17 hours left.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Would mean two months of Grandy in center.

Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I like the Jay Bruce idea better. But does that push Conforto back to Vegas? What does that do to Cuddy?
