My feelings about Yankees aside, it was saddening to hear of his tragic passing.

I was surprised to have missed the news stories about it but then I saw the Yankees were wearing a uniform patch in his memory.

I think the 'never played anywhere other than SS'* label is important to him and to his worshipers, in part because five or fifty years down the road this 'stat' will be trotted out as an extra layer of proof of greatness by those who are either unable or unwilling to remember and/or pass on how things really were that final year (or yearS if you prefer).
That, plus the same spot in his batting order edict, will contribute to the 'He went out on top' angle that seems so important to myth building. That the 'go out on top' story (probably) won't include a post-season trip in his final year will, of course, be treated as Cashman's fault, not his.

He's hoping they erect the (biggest one, and one of the first three you see when walking in) monument before the end of the season so he doesn't have to be bothered to show up again next year.

The Post's Joel Sherman dares to tackle the tiger by calling out Girardi for failing to live up to his early season pledge to "run a season not a farewell tour".
Of course it's always possible that JG is under orders from up top to NOT do to Jeter was he (and Torre before him) was quite willing to do to ARod, Posada, and others to one degree or another, and that's move him down in the lineup, replace him for defense, or simply sit him more often.

They've already erected a statue of Jeter. They put it right between 2nd and 3rd base, and bring it into the dugout every other half-inning. I've seen it--it's very lifelike.

Girardi, btw, is apparently playing the 'he's clutch' card as to why Mr. 487 OPS in August can't be/won't be benched and/or dropped in the lineup.

Yeah, I liked how Girardi said that, the first four months of the season, Jeter was the most (or one of the most) consistent guy(s) in his lineup.

Yeah, he was consistently bad. And now he's consistently worse.
