the top philamet should be dykstra, no?

dykstra had 16.5 WAR as a met, and 25.7 as a phil
mcgraw had 12.8 WAR as a met, and 8.2 as a phil

i assume the criteria we're looking for here is a high level of performance, evenly split between two teams, right?

to that end, allow me to suggest a perfectly outrageous idea...
pending any yet to be performed investigation, your expomet should be... not gary carter... but...

ron hunt (?!)

gary carter is not an expomet. he is an expo, who also played well as a met. his work was not close to evenly shard between the two team, much as we love him as our own. he tallied 55.6 WAR as an expo, compared to 11.3 as a met. ron hunt, on the other hand, had 8.2 WAR as a met and 12.7 as an expo.

i thought long and hard about this. well, for a few minutes this morning at least. gary carters' average of WAR between mets and expos was 33.45, however, the delta between his met and expo totals was 44.3 WAR. subtract the delta from the average, and you get -10.85 as his shared-teamliness-score, or STS. i need a better acronym.

ron hunt's STS is 5.95. for comparison, wayne garret is a -3.5 and rusty staub is a 0.95.

i think this metric best captures what it is to be a player shared by two teams.

willie mays (-74.9 STS) is not a metgiant. angel pagan (3.85 STS) is. but ron hunt (7.45 STS) (him again?!), is THE metgiant, with his 8.2 metly WAR and 9.7 giantly WAR. until i find somebody better, that is...

i've yet to identify a metindian... kent is a -3.15 STS.
nolan ryan may be an astroranger, or an astroangel, but nobody's going to share him with the mets.

Mr. Mays would like to challenge "Joel Youngblood, GiantMet."

Well, then, perhaps he can un-retire and add to his 1.6 Metly WAR.

We have to make cold, hard choices here at ComboMet Combat.

Dave Kingman wants to challenge Youngblood, too.

Dave Kingman wants to challenge Youngblood, too.

Dave Kingman's WAR as a Met: 3.0
Dave Kingman's WAR as a Giant: 4.3
Average. 3.65
Delta: 1.3
Average Minus Delta: 2.35

Better than Youngblood. Not as good as Hunt.

Could we get a formula here?

Apparently it's

[list:5v2zaphu]STS = { [ Abs ( MetsWAR + OtherTeamWAR ) ] / 2 } - [ Abs ( MetsWAR - OtherTeamWAR ) ][/list:u:5v2zaphu]

Or somesuch.

Ouch. You're making my head hurt. Why don't you apply Bill James's power-speed formula, modified for 2 team WARS?

Bill James invented the Power/Speed Number, a single figure to quantify the idea expressed in the "40-40 club" or the "30-30 club" and other combinations of stolen bases and home runs. The formula is 2(HR x SB)/(HR+SB)

you probably don't want the absolute value of the average of the two WARs, as a player with a negative average WAR would end up positive here.

i really wish that bbref frivolity listed the players by WAR in addition to the games, hits, homers, and stolen bases. it would make this so much easier.

the best diamondmet i can find is elmer dessens, at 1.2 STS. chris young has a chance of topping that, i suppose, but will need about 6 WAR in his metly career. i doubt that he does it this season...

I only know this from all the cards I post here -- don't know if he's the best, though.
