When you're not moving a guy to protect his confidence, and it gets all over the media that you're not moving him to protect his confidence, it kind of messes with his confidence, so you might as well move him, to restore his confidence.

Everyone needs to stop fostering the illusion that the position in the lineup matters. When it's your turn to bat, step up to the plate and do your job. What matters is who the pitcher is, what the score is, what runners are on base, not the position in the batting order.

it doesn't matter much..but it does matter. The higher OBP guys you have higher up, the more AB you get in the game. The more AB you get in a game, the more likely you are to win. Duda has been near tops in OBP this season and extends the lineup the more AB he gets.

Pretty much. Especially after the first inning when anyone can end up batting leadoff or cleanup. The main importance of the lineup is to have the best hitters hit earlier in the lineup to allow the opportunity for more at bats.

Everything affects a player, though: the number of people in the stands, whether his girlfriend is going at it with his mother online, the abuse or support of the fans, whether he's hitting well or slumping, or the high or low expectations of a team (which may or may not be symbolized by the player's position in the batting order).

Psyches are real, and managing psyches is a big part of a manager's job, and managing Duda's strikes me as one of the more delicate parts of that job.

This. It drove me up the wall a few years ago when Manuel wanted to bat Reyes second and Reyes said he couldn't do that. Same crap with self-interested relief pitchers who claim they have to pitch the ninth inning to be effective.

Third. I understand players getting attached to the idea of themselves as a leadoff hitter, or a closer. The ownership of it. I think Manuel gave him like a week in the 3rd spot before flip-flopping back.

I think it was specifically that he didn't want Duda thinking he had to hit home runs every time just because he is in the clean-up spot...but rather for him to keep on keeping on as he has.

Bunk? Maybe...but the 4 hole has a certain perceived description attached to it whether it's valid or not. Yes, in a vacuum it shouldn't matter. I don't know that Duda's head is a vacuum.

It mattered a hell of a lot when I was a kid. It was very much a status symbol kinda thing. Just as important was what number you were picked when choosing sides. One summer I went from being the last pick to being the first and that really boosted my kahnfidence.
