correct. metropolitan pinch hitter daniel murphy generated +0.305 WPA by reaching base via error, and also by hitting a ball that resulted in a run scoring via error.

metropolitan pinch hitter daniel murphy also generated +0.038 WPA by advancing to second base via stolen base.

m.e.t.b.o.t. concedes that a portion of the WPA generated on the first play should be apportioned to metropolitan third baseman david wright, however, m.e.t.b.o.t. has no mechanism whereby to allocate the WPA generated on the basepaths to specific players. indeed, me.t.b.o.t. has no mechanism whereby to allocate WPA generated on many types of complex plays, and typically defaults to the most basic allocation.

in this instance, m.e.t.b.o.t. typically does not award baserunning WPA and so no allocation is made to metropolitan third baseman david wright. m.e.t.b.o.t. only allocates baserunning WPA for stolen bases or caught stealings - discrete baserunning events largely independent of the batter.

metropolitan pinch hitter daniel murphy is credited with, effectively, hitting a ball in such a manner as to cause confusion and chaos among the chicago white socks players.

the offense is responsible for 50% of the WPA generated in a given game, and the pitching+defense is responsible for the remaining 50% of the WPA generated in a game, both positive and negative. the WPA generated by the offense of one team must always equal the -1 * the WPA generated by the pitching+defense of the other team. (note that the pitcher is customarily ascribed all of the pitching+defense WPA, however, m.e.t.b.o.t. is able to make rudimentary allocations of defense WPA for some types of plays.) the WPA generated by the winning team must always equal +0.500, while the WPA generated by the losing team must always equal -0.500. this is because the game always begins with each team possessing a 50% chance of winning the game, and the outcome of the game is one team having a 100% chance of having won the game, and the other team having a 0% chance of having won the game.

the only way to maintain this balance in the face of a defensive error is to allow the batter to be credited, effectively, with forcing the error, even though in reality, the batter may have had little if any influence over the play, other than simply by putting the ball into play. unless the batter is a jedi. m.e.t.b.o.t greatly appreciates star wars. mostly because of the robots. r2d2 in particular is considered to be a hero by m.e.t.b.o.t. for being able to communicate so well without being limited by the use of actual human vocal language.

Voting for all four games played last week against Arizona will close on Tuesday afternoon, some time after 2 p.m. The July 4 game is still a little light on votes.

This will be the final tallying for a while. I leave for vacation on Wednesday morning, and probably won't do any tallying until I return at the end of the month. Please do keep voting, even though I won't be posting any reminders. When I return to the United States on July 26, I plan to pretty quickly catch up on the 15 games that are scheduled to be played between July 5 and July 24.

I am (as usual) behind on my PotG voting - like two series worth. But with the off day today and the ASB just around the corner the next few days should be a good time to catch up.

And remember that with Grimm out of town there'll be no one [crossout:3r5dh164]bugging[/crossout:3r5dh164] reminding us to get these done. So, if you're a voter, take note of older games floating back to the front page as I (or others) cast ballots to see if there are any you've missed. Once these things slide back to page two or beyond you're likely to forget about them again and then Ben will return and tabulate them all at once at which point it'll be too late.

How appropriate, y'know, seeing as how you're all orange.

Oh sure, ignore it when I warn you but then get all urgent when Grimm says so.

If we find any votes for Art Shamsky we'll know that your spreadsheet has a bug in it.
