Lefty Herrera eyes May return

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Left-handed reliever Daniel Herrera, who made 16 appearances for the Mets in 2011, expects to be ready to pitch in games in May.

The 28-year-old Herrera, an early arrival to Port St. Lucie, is about to step on a mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last May.

He will not be in major league camp.

Herrera was not a free agent this past offseason. He remained under the Mets' control after making three early season relief appearances for Triple-A Buffalo last year.

*After a quick search, I didn't see a 2013 Injury Thread. If there is, feel free to merge and delete.

DoubleFrank shut down with elbow woes. Asked where he was on a scale of 100 he said "zero."

Should I feel guilty about looking at this as a blessing in disguise?

Murphy to Miss Time With Midsection Discomfort
By ANDREW KEH

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. The Mets first injury concern of the year was revealed after the teams first full squad workout of spring training Monday afternoon.

After practicing with the team, second baseman Daniel Murphy prepared to head back to New York for an examination because of discomfort in his right midsection. General Manager Sandy Alderson said that the concern centered on Murphys intercostal muscles and that he might receive a cortisone shot. The Mets hope Murphy can be back on the field within a week.

About this time last year, David Wright and Scott Hairston dealt with the same issue. Hairstons problem lingered longer than Wrights, but both players were ready for opening day.

I think we just want to be proactive, get me up to New York, especially with all the success they had with David and Scotty last year, Murphy said. The best-case scenario would be if I take a couple of days off, and its fine.

Murphy said he thought the tightness was related to some mechanical tweaks he was trying to make in his swing. Manager Terry Collins said the examination was a precautionary one. He said he did not envision Murphy missing too much time.

Murphy has gone through a fair share of physical issues in his career, but he has generally been more accident-prone than injury-prone. In the last few years he has injured both knees, twice during plays at second base and once during a rundown on the bases.

I would think that 20 teams down there, each with 200 or more players to look after, would pool their resources, buy an MRI machine, and set up a central clinic or two to share.

Brewer Mat* Gamel, who missed almost all of 2012 with a knee injury, heard a pop in that same knee during BP this past weekend and will now miss all of 2013 as well.

Drafted in the 4th round out of HS in 2005, Gamel tore through the AA Southern League in 2008 and reached AAA by the end of that year. By 2009 he was Baseball America's #34 prospect heading into the year and saw his first ML call-up that September where he racked up 128 ABs.
His biggest problem, prior to the injuries anyway, was that although he came up as a 3rd baseman he really wasn't one which, in Milwaukee, meant he was in a waiting line behind Prince Fielder for the other side of the diamond to open up. So he wound up spending almost all of 2010 in the minors (just 15 ML ABs) and most of 2011 as well (26 ML ABs); not the usual timeline or path for a top prospect, especially one putting up a AAA stat line of .301/.374/.512 in over 1,200 PAs across three seasons.
Gamel then finally gets his chance when the Princely one skips out to Detroit, only to go on the shelf after May 1st last year and now it looks like it'll be at least April of 2014 before he plays again. At that point it'll be nearly nine years after he was drafted and more than five after reaching AAA in what seemed like just a procedural step into a regular big league job.

* he spells his nickname Mat (with one T) because he spells his full name as Mathew - also with just the one T

I actually had a coworker at my last gig who also was named Mathew and went by Mat as a nickname. And had his name misspelled an average of 10 times per week.

So, hints that Johan won't be ready to open the season. Insinuations that it's a conditioning issue. Sfwhat?

Jon Niese, step up and start picturing yourself as an Opening Day dude.

John Harper ?@NYDNHarper
Going on Daily News Live to talk about Santana's now-delayed spring training. Probably more to it than Mets are saying.

Pedro Feliciano shut down with irregular heartbeat.

Jamie Hoffman just came back from New York cleared to play after being dinged for an irregular EKG. I'm sure Feliciano will be OK. He just needs to get the zombie virus he picked up in Tampa last year out of his system.

did any of these supposed reporters down there figure to ASK any of the questions or just feel like insinuating there's more to it and he's basically got one foot in the grave?

i.e. was he supposed to have started throwing earlier, and didn't? Was this planned: is he behind schedule or did he not throw because he's feel this fatigue? If not, is he behind schedule or was he never really intended to have a 'normal' Spring Training routine? Is his revised routine formed from what's the bare minimum he needs to pitch Opening Day or based on his current arm strength/fitness level?

Or you know, we could just run wild with rampant speculation and insinuation.

Or... I could be wrong. Been known to happen.

Pedro Feliciano OK, awaits clearance

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano has been diagnosed with a small "hole" in the exterior of his heart, the southpaw said Saturday morning upon returning to camp.

Feliciano said he feels fine, the issue is not life-threatening and surgery was not brought up as an option.

Feliciano, who said he had an irregular heartbeart, will wear a heart monitor for a few days. He has yet to be cleared to resume baseball activities.

Feliciano had been dispatched to New York for further testing after his initial physical was flagged. He underwent an MRI.

"They said they found out some little hole in my heart," Feliciano said. "I've never felt nothing in my heart, so it's surprising to me."

Feliciano, who is in camp on a minor league deal, said he was not alarmed. He said he had never previously been diagnosed with anything similar.

"No, no, no," he said. "They said everything was right, fine -- just there was a little hole outside the heart."

Manager Terry Collins said there is concern about the heart issue being serious.

"My understanding is he has a heart condition that could possibly be very serious. So that's why we're being very, very careful with him," Collins said. "Until we get further results on some of the tests he took in New York, he's not to be on the field."
