I don't know much about Gonzalez Germen either, but that's another whacky name, isn't it?

He went 12-12, 4.34 at three levels combined last year, most at AA Bingo. Not sure what they like about him other than I suppose he's close enough to the bigs to warrant a keep. Seems to have some control issues. Sorta looks like Manny Acosta Jr. here.

depth. always depth. You gotta have relievers in the minors too. they're a dime a dozen, but that's why you stock them now, and promote the ones that do.

But as JCL said, he changed arm motions last year (and I believe is a former Depodesta guy) for Baltimore and had good results in the minors, but Baltimore's bullpen was pretty good and he didn't get a shot.

I think when it comes to these kinds of offseason roster decisions, you keep the guys who have enough value that you might use them this year -- like Burke -- that you don't want a competitor stealing from you, while not protecting the guys, like Aderlin Rodriguez and Jefry Marte, who teams will hopefully see as too young to make an impact RIGHT NOW.

Yeah, mebbe. I tend to place guys on the 40 higher on the depth chart than guys who ain't. But sometimes that's transparently just not the way it is.

I'll add Bixler on the next update, and then kick him out as soon as the Mets start addressing their outfield situation.

And as bad as Duda is in RF, Hart was moved to 1B last season. He's 31, and his speed has gone from 25 SBs a year, to 5-10 SBs. So again, he's better than Duda in RF also, even at this stage, but $10m better? I don't think so, on either count. So, if they're going to spend $10m more to upgrade RF (and i don't think they will), I'd hope they could do better than a slowing Cory Hart without having to trade assets, too.

Probably. but Hart won't play a bad left field(is Duda's position now anyway) and is a pretty good player with some power. Is it strictly $10 mill better? well, no, but they could do much worse. Especially for a one year guy which leaves you the option of getting someone else next year that might be more of a long term plan, and if Hart has a really good year you'd probably get a pick for him too.

bill james predicts the following for lucas duda in 2013:

18 homers in 510 plate appearances, slash lines of 268 / 356 / 454 with a wOBA of 0.352

in other words, lucas duda is projected to be the better hitter. and corey hart is slated to be a first baseman for the brewers next year. how does that appreciably help out our outfield defense?

duda is cheaper, should walk more frequently, and strike out less, with room to improve. he's a butcher in right field, but might not be godawful in left.

hart is, of course, a more predictable commodity.

oddly enough, what bill james projects is far from foolproof.

I don't know if I make that deal, but I think the Mets, with a lot more data about Duda and knowledge about Duda as a player, a person, and all that, might think differently. They might not see that improvement coming from Duda, for whatever reason. Hart is a plus baserunner, if a poor defender even if he's better than Duda. Duda is minus, pretty badly, at both. I mean, Fangraphs has Duda at -1.1 WAR and Hart at 2.9.

Hart's wRC+ was 125 to Duda's 101 last season, and that's part adjusted.

gun to my head I probably don't make that deal, but there is merit to it.

Using James' predictions, I'm not sure how a guy with nine fewer homers and an OPS of .014 lower is a better hitter. Also telling is the PA - Duda is projected as a platoon-plus sort of guy, and Hart as an everyday guy. The missing 124 PA have to go to someone who is not likely to be as productive as Hart.

Look, I'm not saying that Corey Hart is the difference between fourth place and the pennant, but Lucas Duda is the worst regular outfielder I have seen since the heyday of Greg Luzinski - maybe as bad as the Todd Hundley experiment - and Corey Hart, until last season, was about neutral. If I had a choice between these two guys for 2013 I'd take Hart every time.
