Mets 2012 Season Tickets: A Flickr Spread

Craig Swan is a guy who I like almost none of the available photos. The childish goodtime grins clash with the adult mustaches for a perpetual losing team to suggest to me a guy who parties with Ron Burgandy too much, and doesn't take his job particularly seriously.

I liked Swan, I just don't like his photos.

Ron Swoboda, on the other hand, rarely took a bad photo.

But really, of all the great shots available of Mookie, they really got a dog there.

I was gonna remark on that Swan photo, you always see that one and never any action shots.

That Strawberry image (in its uncropped version) is one of my all-time favorite baseball images.

I think that in general, the Mets cheaped it up on the photos. Design, too, probably. Perhaps they wanted to avoid licensing fees, I'm guessing. With the Mets, I'm always imagining that there's a teen-ager in the family long on designing aspirations and short on talent who nevertheless gets these gigs so that the team can pinch a few more pennies. Whatever, they often relied on their in-house head shots to produce this run of tickets. It's a shock to me that the organization even put out these tickets, with a different image for each game.

That really is classic Darryl.

The Swan photo looks like it might have been lifted directly from the 1976 yearbook. (I'm sure it was in a yearbook; I'm less certain of which one.)

I understand why there's no Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran in there, but I don't know why Billy Wagner is on Armando Benitez's ticket.

Swan looks like he REALLY wants you to come hang out in the sauna with him.

Trachsel looks about half past fifty. I'm pretty sure I dated his daughter during high school.

Expecting Butch Bentonian things from Luis Rosado...or am I expecting Luis Rosadolike things from Butch Benton?

A number of teams this year had licensing deals with Topps and used card images on their season seats.

I believe that the Cubs are the only team that issued Topps produced season tickets this year. It is a trend, though. Other teams that produced Topps themed season tickets in recent years include the Padres (2007/8?), Reds (2010) and Braves (2009). Billy Williams's '61 Topps card appears on the ticket for the Mets 6/26 game at Wrigley; Jim Hickman's '70 card appears on the ticket to next day's Mets/Cubs game. Thus, Hickman's image appears on tickets for two different teams this season (Mets and Cubs).

Some of the more ambitious season ticket issues for this season include the Yankees' -- 39 images representing some of the organization's greatest moments:

and the Dodgers, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium, also with a greatest moments tickets set.

These two ticket sets were produced so that any image might appear on any given ticket.

You'll notice how the Dodgers and Yankees (cf. Mets 2012 Mets tickets) produced their ticket images in monochrome or sepia tones (probably to overcome the fact that some of the source images were in color while others were in black and white) thus creating consistent imagery.

Yeah, there's definitely some things I like about the Mets design, but in general, it's the weakest on the page here so far.

But I ain't gone to any games at Citi this year, so I'm not missing anything either way.

The Mets had the right idea. But the execution was lacking. And those pictures. Action shots that are so tightly cropped so as to be rendered pointless. And so many shots look like they were lifted from the Stars of Tomorrow section of old Mets yearbooks. Look at Mazzilli's ticket ferchrissakes. He's probably the biggest heartthrob in team history and the Mets couldn't have found a geekier photo of the Italian Stallion if they tried to.
