metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Howie was Lewin with the PBP?, caught his Mets Extra, liked him.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 It was my first time with Lewin and I think he's an immediate improvement over Wayne. It may be easy to get up for Opening Day, but we'll see how he does in a June blowout against the Orioles.I think he is going to be OK.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Before Lewin started his first inning of pbp Howie gave a nice heartfelt shout-out to Wayne Hagin, but managed also to give a nice introduction to Lewin as "a guy I know you're gonna love." It was a nice moment. Obviously Wayne must be a super guy irl, but didn't get it done here and I guess Howie feels a bit responsible, like maybe he could have fought harder for him or something.Either way, I like this pairing. Lewin got off a great line when they acknowledged Howie was more Honeymooners and Lewin more Family Guy. Turning back to the game, Lewin goes: Davis addresses the ball. I guess a lot of people missed it which was the point of their conversation.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Lewin recites Batista's failures to date and then:You root for a guy like Miguel Batista. He writes novels and poetry. He paints and has a picture of Albert Einstein in his locker. He may be the exact 180-degree opposite of Guillermo Mota.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 small sample size and all, but I'm sold on Lewin.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Gotta say that I love Howie and Josh, their chemistry is effortless. I got to my car today as Wright was on deck in the 8th. It just so happened that a little bird entered the booth right then and couldn't get out, then the banter started back and forth between Howie and Josh at the birds expense. It was great stuff punctuated by Josh telling Howie that he was going to try and guide the bird out in case he impeded Howie's call of Wright putting the Mets ahead, and of course Wright with the big hit and Howie with the great call that apparently frightened the bird out of the booth. Like I said it was all so easy, Howie sounds very comfortable and Josh fits right in.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Howie and Josh were also giving Gary the business for wearing a Finland hockey shirt.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 (edited) Josh Lewin continues to effortlessly weaves in pop-culture references. There must be thousands already but here are two: he described yesterday as a "blue sky afternoon" which was probably referencing the Allman Brothers song "Blue Sky." A few weeks ago, he made a Seinfeld reference that Howie didn't get. The ballboy brought out baseballs to the ump and for some reason, they mentioned that the ballboy's name was Jimmy. Lewin said "Jimmy likes bringing baseballs." This was noting the Seinfeld episode with the guy named Jimmy who talked about himself in the first-person.What's most important is that he is excellent at describing the game. He hasn't done baseball on the radio in years but you can't tell this from how good he is. Edited May 18, 2012 by Guest
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I find myself listening to the radio more often than watching the games on TV.As good as the SNY announcers are (alas, even 6 years in, Gary is not quite as good on TV as he was on radio), the addition of Josh to pair with Howie has been such an improvement on the radio broadcast, it makes it particularly enjoyable.

Within a month, Lewin and Howie have a chemistry that Wayne and Howie I don't think ever got.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Howie worked with Wayne. He likes working with Josh.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Today: Howie and Josh, were discussing the use of advanced stats. Howie said that they are pieces of the puzzle, but:Howie: I would rather find out about a baseball player from a baseball scout than the cast of The Big Bang Theory.Josh: Bazinga!
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 regarding howie, i suppose that's true, but it depends on what you're looking for. if you want a description of what hte player plays like, you wont get it from the stats. if you want to know how well the player plays, you might not get a full picture from teh scout.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 I've been thinking for years that Howie was over-rated by you chumps, but I take that back. Now that he's been de-Wayned, I'm coming around to the idea that he's a top-shelf broadcaster, who hasn't, since Gary Cohen went TV, had a partner who got his references, and allowed him to be who he is.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Rose has grown on me as well and I agree that Lewin who I like is a big part of it. I do still miss Bob Murphy on the radio.

I love how he occasionally slides in jokes that only some people get, never making light of it, just slips it in there and keeps going as if it's perfectly natural to mention changing trains at Jamaica while describing a fielder going after a pop-up even though it's likely a fair portion of the audience were confused about where or what that was all about.
