That doesn't advance anything.

I'm sure that either Martinez will get some meaningful work or be returned in a prompt manner. The way Terry manages this team, it's hard to see him not getting some chances.

Beltran scratched from Saturday lineup because his right eye is burning.

No, I'm not making this up.

That's a shame, as we could've used a righthanded bat against Happ. Hairston will probably get a start in right, and Paulino catching, leaving the team with Pridie, Harris, or Fartinez in center and Murphy at first.

Per Andy McCullough:

Carlos Beltran awoke this morning with swelling in his right eye, enough to remove him from the lineup for todays game against Houston. It just burns, he explained, his eye glassy, before heading for more treatment. Beltran is expected to be checked out by doctors.
That altered Terry Collins plans and shuffled one of Friday nights heroes, Fernando Martinez, into the lineup.

Two injury notes:
1. Angel Pagan (strained oblique) is expected to resume baseball activity today in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
2. Pedro Beato (elbow tendinitis) is traveling to meet Triple-A Buffalo to continue his rehab.

Here's something that at least sounds like good news...

Optimistic Davis set to begin rehab on ankle
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com | 05/16/11 7:46 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Ike Davis was no longer walking with a heavy limp Monday, nor sporting a heavy plastic boot on his left foot. Briefly reuniting with his teammates at Citi Field, Davis was scheduled to fly down to Florida on Monday evening to begin his rehab from a sprained left ankle, with the goal of returning to the Mets when he is eligible on May 26.

"He told me he'll be ready on the 26th," manager Terry Collins said. "But only time will tell. Once he starts resuming his baseball activities, we'll see how that ankle responds."

After the ankle began healing and the fears of a more serious injury subsided, Davis became confident in a speedy return following his infield collision with David Wright last week. The first baseman said Monday that he is "going to be playing for sure" when he is eligible to come off the DL next week in Chicago, and Collins expressed similar optimism. "Being in your apartment by yourself all day is not fun," Davis said.

His next step involves a rehab program at the team's Spring Training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., which may or may not include Minor League games.

Given that Wright appears headed to the disabled list with his own back injury, Davis' speedy recovery has become even more important for the Mets, who need his thump in the middle of their lineup. Prior to the injury, Davis was hitting .302 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs.

"I knew it wasn't that bad," Davis said of his injury. "I just don't like missing time. It's not what I'm here to do."

I can't believe Terry used a press-release corporatespeak phrase like "resuming baseball activities" in actual conversation.

Pagan is an encouraging 1-3 with a walk and a homer in his first rehab game.

Yeah, Tracky today quotes Terry expressing doubt that his return is gonna be as quick as we'd like.

Hasn't it felt like everytime we've gotten a major player back we lose one? Bay back, Pagan gone. Pagan back, Dickey gone?

Yeah, Dickey's walking around in a book. supposedly they've ruled out the Achilles but it still doesn't sound good.

I was thinking Gumby.

Actually the knuckleball delivery does have a little Pokey to it no?

If I correct it to walking around in a boot will you make a Mother Goose joke and an old lady who lived in a shoe..?

I had no idea what you mean.

The boot is sometimes more intimidating than it needs to be. Sometimes it's serious, but sometimes it's a major prop for a minor injury. Is it his pushoff foot or his landing foot that he hurt?

Joba with torn ligaments in his elbow, Tommy john says Girardi, a real doc has yet to confirm that.

Not that you root for injuries or anything but what have the Joba Rules produced other than preventing the MFYs from using this guy before he was an overweight alcoholic and his arm was live? Idiots.

The next time I see Harris or Hairston's name I hope it's followed by the phrase "Designated for Assignment." Throw these guys out with the fucking old magazines.

setback for johan. he stopped throwing off the mound:
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=6658027

PITTSBURGH -- New York Mets left-hander Johan Santana stopped throwing off a mound 10 days ago after "soreness" in his surgically repaired left shoulder surfaced when he increased the intensity of his delivery, general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday.

Alderson said Santana has resumed long-tossing on flat ground and hoped to return to a mound later this week.

Santana is working back from Sept. 14 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

Alderson said the Mets will be prudent with Santana this season. After all, the left-hander is owed $24 million next season and $25.5 million in 2013. The Mets have a $25 million team option for 2014 that otherwise requires a $5.5 million buyout.

"The nice thing is, as we speak today, our starting rotation is doing nicely," Alderson said. "In that sense the pressure to get him back earlier doesn't exist. Tomorrow, that could change completely. But, I think the other thing is, we're looking at Johan long term here, not short term. So he's got to be right."

Alderson did not pinpoint a timetable for Santana's return to the majors under the assumption the left-hander can progress smoothly from the June 3 setback with no other hiccups. But Alderson did note that Santana has not yet started what would be considered the beginning of the spring training program that pitchers begin in mid-February to prepare for Opening Day.

"We are now trying to get him to the point at which he would be beginning his spring training," Alderson said. "The thought process now is that we need to get him to the point where he would have been on the 14th of February. And from that point he will proceed with his spring training, which could last as long as spring training typically does. ... Once he's thrown off the mound (again), he needs to do it more than once without discomfort in order for us to feel that, OK, we're at Feb. 14."

I don't get it, a small collision and you twist your ankle weirdly going down, bruise your ankle to the bone and may need _microfracture_ surgery. How crazy unfortunate.

Davis' bone bruise is still not healing. reevaluate in 3 weeks.

It might be faster just to cut the damn thing off and have him grown a new one.
