I think the only appropiate way would be a playable fly to the opposite field warning track that a 10-year-old reaches out for over the glove of the waiting rightfielder and grabs.

How hard are they going to play this up? give him a day off here and there on the road so that he breaks it at home?

Oooh, how about a meaningless squibb single in the bottom of the 9th at home in a game the Yankees are losing 13-1 and the entire crowd has left?

it's all very simple, when the time comes don't buy the newspapers , don't tune to any local stations. I've become great at this.

Maybe it'll not only be a weak dribbler, but it'll come in a game where he makes three errors, including the game-ender, gets in a fight with A-Rod in the dugout, whines to the umps, gets picked off after the lone single, gets caught by the mic foulmouthing a fan, and does all sorts of profoundly uncaptainly things.

Not that I wish ill on anyone, but if he were out for the season and stuck on 2990+? Imagine the endless questions and 'distraction' he'd get in spring training next year?

Here's the scenario I want.
Yanks down by a run, bottom of the ninth. Runners on first and third, two out, Jeter up.
He hits a ball to the right side that hits the runner between first and second.
The runner is called out, but, by rule he is credited with his 3,000th hit.
Game over.
Yankees lose! Yankees Lose!
And the 3,000th hit carries that stigma(that it wasn't a clean hit).
Forever.

This is how I roll. I've never seen footage of any second of the 2009 World Series. Not one bit.

umm..there wasn't a world series that year..

Same thing here. If you asked me whether that series went 5 or 6 games, I couldn't tell you with any certainty.

On a related note, every time I see this thread at the top of the forum I think to myself that I can't think of any MFYs who aren't douchbags.

Jeter still a top SS

Scouts liked Jeter over the Mets' Jose Reyes because of Jeter's durability. The Blue Jays' Escobar wasn't a lock over Jeter among the five scouts we spoke with.

With the criteria only being who would you want for this season, the scout said he would put Jeter at No. 9 on his list. Those ahead of Jeter were the Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki, the Phillies' Jimmy Rollins, the Cubs' Starlin Castro, the Braves' Alex Gonzalez, the Indians' Asdrubal Cabrera, the Rangers' Elvis Andrus, the Blue Jays' Yunel Escobar and the White Sox's Alexei Ramirez.

come the fuck on , who writes this shit, let's narrow the criteria all the way down so we can get Jeter in the top ten.

Summary: He's aging, is clearly on the downside, is below average in BA, OBA, SLG, and costs his team runs with his defense ... but his Jeter-ness makes him still a top ten SS.

Yeah, got it.

yeah, i can kinda go along with this logic. if reyes gets hurt, you're gonna take a big hit with your replacement player. if jeter gets hurt, your team might improve.

How did Reyes not even make the top 10 of players "for this year"?
He's near the top in the NL in hits, triples, steals, etc. etc.

'Tis a puzzlement.

MLB.com carries the first (actually probably not the first) of what I'm sure will be many articles declaring that: Stadium only suitable setting for Jeter's hit -- http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110613&content_id=20424192&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

With seven hits to go but also just three games left of the Yanx' current 10-game homestand - a homestand which wouldn't surprise me if it were planted at this spot in the season so as to increase the likelihood of a DJ3K celebration - things are looking dicey. Unfortunately for central planners, Jeet's slower hit pace this season isn't cooperating. One then wonders how much "rest" he'll require on the subsequent road-trip in order to steer the joyous event back to the Bronx and thus avoid a travesty of epic proportions.

Room service "rest" to the rescue.
He left tonight's game with a "sore calf".
I'm guessing he will return in time to get a few hits on their next road trip, then go for the record when his team returns home.

I can't wait (ok , so more than a tad sarcasm there) to hear the tv and radio reporters try to say "three thousandth base hit" real fast without lisping. (try it yourself.)

What a joy awaits us this week, Andy "Mother Theresa" Pettitte will be taking the stand at some point to declare that yes Clemens did in fact tell him he took HGH... NYT paints a picture of the loyal lap dog and how difficult it will be for him in court......

An Old Best Friend May Bring Down Clemens

Douchebag leaving court Tuesday

Roger Clemens, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, will stand trial in federal court in Washington this week on charges of perjury, making false statements and obstructing Congress for testifying at a House hearing in 2008 that he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

His potential public undoing is the latest fallout from baseballs continuing challenges with doping; one possible outcome is a prison sentence for Clemens, a player who otherwise would be on his way to the Hall of Fame.

But one thing sets Clemenss trial apart from the other drug cases involving baseball stars that drew national attention: his former close friend and loyal teammate Andy Pettitte, a man Clemens considered his little brother, could be the witness who brings him down.

Pettitte, whose wholesome boy-next-door demeanor endeared him to Yankees fans as he pitched in seven World Series for the team, admitted in 2008 that he used human growth hormone in 2002 and 2004 to treat injuries. He is expected to give powerful testimony that could help the prosecution establish that Clemens also used the drug.

Among the former players on the prosecutions witness list, he is the only one expected to testify that Clemens acknowledged using performance-enhancing substances. The trial begins Wednesday with jury selection.

I cant imagine what hes going through, knowing he will have to sit there and testify with his best friend right there at the defense table, said the former Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, who testified about his own steroid use when he was a government witness in April at the federal perjury trial of the home run king Barry Bonds, who was convicted of obstruction of justice.

I was close with Barry, but my testimony was all about me and my own use, said Giambi, who played with Clemens and Pettitte for two years with the Yankees. So I really feel for Andy. Knowing how he is, its going to be very, very hard for him.

Neither Pettitte nor Clemens, who was in court Tuesday for a hearing about his trial, responded to interview requests made through their lawyers.

Pettitte, who grew up in Deer Park, Tex., became a Christian when he was 11, later meeting Laura Dunn through a Baptist church where her father was the pastor. He married Dunn, his high school sweetheart, when he was 21 and she was 18.

Though he never spoke much in the clubhouse about his religious convictions, Pettitte became known among the Yankees for his strait-laced life. Some of his former teammates, including catcher Jorge Posada, said Pettittes best quality was that he could be trusted.

Pettitte, 39, was also known as more of a follower than a leader, a perfect fit as a friend for Clemens, who relished the role of alpha dog. The two pitchers were teammates for nine seasons, with the Yankees and the Houston Astros.

Pettitte was an eager student of Clemens, his childhood idol, when the two began working out together as Yankees under the supervision of Clemenss trainer, Brian McNamee. As pitchers, they were polar opposites, particularly in how they dealt with defeat. The brash Clemens would never admit to having any weaknesses, and the self-critical Pettitte often berated himself. Despite those differences, they soon grew so tight that they were seemingly attached by Velcro.

It was strange if you didnt see them together in the clubhouse, said John Flaherty, the former Yankees catcher who is now a YES Network commentator. Youd see them running, lifting or throwing a football before games, then theyd play golf on off days. It was always Andy following Roger around.

Flaherty said Pettitte was as loyal a teammate as you would want to have, which is why Pettittes potential testimony against the 48-year-old Clemens will be difficult for Yankees past and present. Asked how he would feel about the situation, Flaherty shifted his weight from side to side and averted his eyes.

Its disappointing because they got along so well, he said. Andy is going to be uncomfortable. Im going to be uncomfortable. Were all going to be uncomfortable.

Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said that even hearing tidbits of news about Pettittes testimony would be painful.

Andy was always prepared to handle the pressure, but in court, he is not in his comfort zone, Girardi said. Its out of his realm, and its out of our realm, too. None of us want to see that.

In lieu of testifying in front of Congress, Pettitte submitted a sworn affidavit describing what he claimed Clemens had said to him about his drug use. So what Pettitte will say on the witness stand may not come as a surprise. Rather, it will be the fact that he is saying it in a courtroom, sitting several feet from Clemens, that will probably produce a dramatic, if not agonizing, scene.

In 1999 or 2000, I had a conversation with Roger Clemens in which Roger told me he had taken human growth hormone, Pettitte said in the affidavit, a potentially pivotal declaration if spoken before a jury.

Everybody knows that Andys a goody-two-shoes that will have a big impact on the jury, said Alan M. Dershowitz, a Harvard law professor and celebrity lawyer. He has no motives to lie, no conceivable reason to testify against his best friend. So, if Im a defense attorney, I would try to get him off the stand as soon as possible to minimize his impact.

Pettitte added in the sworn statement that he told his wife about the conversation. Then, during baseballs first wave of Congressional hearings in 2005, he said, he brought up the subject with Clemens again.

I asked him what he would say if asked by reporters if he ever took performance-enhancing drugs, the affidavit said. When he asked me what I meant, I reminded him that he had told me he had used H.G.H.

Clemens insisted he had told Pettitte that his wife, Debbie, not Clemens himself, had used the drug. Pettitte backed down but later told his wife, Laura, about it, the statement said. In his Congressional testimony, Clemens said Pettitte misheard and misremembers what Clemens had said about growth hormone.

Laura Pettitte is also on the prosecutions witness list, but Clemenss lawyers have asked the judge to bar her testimony because, they said, it is hearsay. Some legal experts say that motion is simply the defenses effort to protect Clemens from possibly devastating testimony.

Peter Keane, a professor at Golden Gate University School of Law, said Pettitte would be seen by the jury as a very reluctant witness who just cant lie under oath, even for a close friend, and that will be the biggest problem for the defense.

So I think Clemens is in big trouble, he added. He probably wants to kick himself for picking the kid who was the Eagle Scout on the block to shoot off his mouth to.

It would be great if Clemens got convicted the same day Jeter gets his big hit.

The Clemens trial deserves its own thread.

Testimony from Pettitte and Knobs that MacNamee hooked them up has already been disallowed, as well as any testimony relating to MacNamee being accused of rape in the past. Sounds like Judgey McJustice wants a streamlined trial. Maybe for the best.

Yep , nothing that Pettitte will say he hasn't already said but now he'll be doing it with his "best friend" sitting a few feet away.

"'Every time I get a base hit or a double, I clap. That's me, that's my game, and I don't try to do anything bad to another player,' Cervelli said. 'That's Cervelli.'"

"And then I get drilled in the back and I don't know why"

That was a typically annoying Yanx/Sawx game last night.
- 4 hours running time? -- Check (3:59 actually despite just 7 runs scored total)
- 9 pitchers used? -- Check
- Arguments, HBPs, ejections, bruised feelings, pre-emptive dugouts emptying? -- Check

The Sox left about a million guys on base (16 I think was the final total).
Sabathia didn't get crushed for once although he danced in trouble all night and it took him 130 pitches just to get through six innings.
Ortiz blew a run by first mis-reading a single and then trotting to 3rd on a hit where Ronnie Paulino could have scored from 2nd even with his broken toe.
Sox might have had a chance in the end if only Mariano had been required to get the ball within eight inches of the zone before getting a called strike.

Derek Jeters Dating Rituals; Yankee Star Reportedly Sends Girlfriends Home With Autographed Memorabilia

Yankee star Derek Jeter is trending after a New York Post story revealed details about the shortstop's casual romantic flings.

Apparently after sneaking dates into his apartment through the backdoor of Trump World Tower to avoid paparazzi, Jeter then sends his girlfriends home the next morning with a gift basket containing signed baseball memorabilia. The pattern came to light when one of the girlfriends got the same gift basket a second time.

Jeter broke up with longtime girlfriend Minka Kelly this summer and has apparently been playing the field ever since. No comment from Jeter's reps.

love that it's because he'd forgotten he slept with the girl already. I don't get how this is why it came to light. It seems to imply that she was pissed, but it's not like she didn't realize who he was. She could've walked out and still exposed the story, but clearly she slept with him again. Unless he's selling each girl on the "You're so special, here's some stuff" but he's not even presenting it himself!

Jeez. All I got from Joe Pepitone was a swat on the ass and cab fare.

If those girls had slept with a Met player, they wouldn't need an autograph to remember their night together.
