Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Hidalgo sort of blew my mind. But I'm thinking back to Jose Valentin on the previous list. If he can make that one, I'm going to go with Damion Easley for this one.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 It's all about association. Hidalgo leads to Washington just as surely as Valentin leads to Easley.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 There's still two slots open. Milner could be one of them. Tommy Davis had a long career. So did Jim Hickman. He played in Wrigley, ya know. That's who I'd be thinking about if I was playing. Willie Montanez hit 30 HR's as a runner up 1971 ROY to Earl Williams (33 HR's). Today, writers considered Carlos Baerga's HOF worthiness.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Ellis and Rich and ClaudellMets with a similar smellIn right field's darkest hourThey had arms and had powerThey were offered; we said, "What the hell?"
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 I wonder how many Primanti's sandwiches Donn downed when he had the Power in Pittsburgh?
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Jim Fregosi broke in as a teen-ager and had an 18 year MLB career. He hit 22 HR's in 1970 -- his one-season high.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Juan Samuel was a major leaguer for 16 seasons -- a Met for half a season. He hit 28 HR's in 1987. For whatever it's worth though, offense was up markedly in 1987.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Mike Marshall hit 121 HR's from 1983 through 1988. Marshall's presence on the Mets kept Dave Magadan on Buddy's bench for more time than Mags ought to have sat. Magadan himself wasn't much of a HR hitter, but he did carve out a 16 year MLB career. Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Willie Montanez would be my next guess, so I will go with it.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Jeff Conine.....I was going to use him in the early to late rounds yesterday but held him out...until now....
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 In his first year as a Met, Bernard Gilkey clubbed 30 HR's. That's almost one fifth of the way to the top 50 on this trivial list right there. From one season. I'll post the rest of the list right after LunchBucket posts his rock and roll answers. Unless the list is solved by then. (As if no one's gonna solve the remaining answers. Jeff Conine.)And how come none of you cheaters guessed Ed Kranepool? A guy can't hit 160 HR's in 17 seasons?

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Tony Clark and Jeff Conine are in the top 40. This is the extra credit round, where forum members try to "guess" spots 43 -50. I skipped spots 41 (Otis) and 42 (Bay) because those were submitted as wrong answers in the top 40 phase of this tournament. I put the words "guess" in quotes. Guess why? Or, I should [crossout:10lkudjv]say[/crossout:10lkudjv] write: "Guess" why? The top 40 list was solved, collectively, in like 26 seconds, with no wrong answers. Not even John Milner. Here's the baseball reference link to baseball's all time career HR leaders if anybody wants to cheat. Not that I suspect such a thing. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/HR_career.shtml I'm posting this link because I know that no one will click on it prior to submitting any "guesses".
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Of for fucks sake man......I just wasted Conine.....
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Ken Henderson was a Met for 15 minutes. But he was a major leaguer for 16 seasons. In the four full seasons Ken played between 1970 and 1974 (he was injured in '73 and missed more than half of that season) Ken hit 70 HR's. That's more than half way to the top 50 in just four seasons.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Most of these hints I'm hinting have to be misdirections: only two spots remain unsolved.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 But seriously, one of the remaining two answers is, I think, an obvious one. So obvious that I'm surprised no one submitted his name in the top 40 regular credit phase. Well. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/HR_career.shtml
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I cheated too. The other one is only obvious because of his longevity, methinks. He's just a compiler, you know.
