So obvious that I'm surprised no one submitted his name in the top 40 regular credit phase. Well. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/HR_career.shtmlI actually thought of him during the top 40, but then didn't think he'd make the top 40, and then forgot about him.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Oh boy. Now there's trouble. Because me, smartypants me, missed Jay Bell. And Bell hit 195 HR's. So now I have to revise the top 50 list. And tomorrow, we'll redo this extra credit portion of the trivia question all over again.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 I went over this list carefully. So it couldn't be that I skipped over Jay Bell's name. What happened is that I simply forgot that Jay Bell was ever a Met to begin with. FWIW, the reigning champion to this trivia contest, G-Fafif, also whiffed on Bell. I know this because he said that he peeked at the extra credit answers after the top 40 list was solved and saw that there was one "no HR's as a Met" in the extra credit round (Wilson). So I'm in good company. Unless G-Fafif remembered that Bell was a Met but thought that Bell hit at least one Met HR. That's a possibility.

Did I ever tell you that in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons, (the Art Howe years) I became totally disinterested in the Mets right around the All-Star Break? I don't think I watched 10 games total, combining the second half of Howe's two full seasons. And I was a full season ticket holder during the Howe era. When I look at those rosters, there are some players that I can't even visualize. Eric Valent? Who the hell was he?

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Certainly doesn't deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as Jay Bell.I like to think of Bell as the most counterproductive Met ever. I'm probably wrong, and there's a pitcher from 1962 with a 7.11 ERA over 59 innings, but damn --- 142 plate appearances and three RBI --- there's a guy who retired before he retired. You know, when Mo Vaughn got hurt that year, Bell was our original replacement at first. Jay Bell!

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Looking at his B-R page.....Bell was at 1st base for 13 games....starting 3....was he a defensive replacement or what? , 14 games at 2nd( starting 10) and 14 at 3rd....starting 7 .
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I think the key is thinking of really, really old Mets players. Because most of them used to be good for a while, while wearing other clothes.

I know what you mean. That was my point. Valent hit 13 HR's in 2004 in only 32 starts. And he doesn't register. Quirk: Valent was a major leaguer for five seasons (2001-05). He hit 13 HR's for the Mets in 2004 - the only 13 HR's in his entire ML career.

If I was in your position, standings wise, I'd throw out a guess every four seconds. Makes sense tactically, no? I'd do the same if I was Edgy.
