When did Christian Lopez suddenly qualify as a non-profit organization?

____________________________

If the fan who returned Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit ball has to pay taxes on the goods he received from the New York Yankees, companies are ready to strike out his debt.

Christian Lopez, a 23-year-old cellphone salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., scooped up the milestone baseball Saturday. Instead of trying to sell the ball, he decided to give it back to Jeter. The Yankees responded by giving him memorabilia and tickets, setting off media speculation that Lopez would have to pay taxes on his windfall.

According to accountants contacted by the New York Daily News and New York Times, that tax bill could end up being anywhere from $5,000 to $14,000.

"Worse comes to worse, I'll have to pay the taxes," Lopez told the Daily News on Monday. "I'm not going to return the seats. I have a lot of family and friends who will help me out if need be.

"The IRS has a job to do, so I'm not going to hold it against them, but it would be cool if they helped me out a little on this."

Well, it looks as if he will get some help if he needs it. Miller High Life issued a statement Wednesday saying that the company would cover Lopez's tax bill.

"Miller High Life believes you should be rewarded for doing the right thing, not penalized," Miller High Life brand manager Brendan Noonan said in a statement. "We want to recognize Christian Lopez, and in turn everyone like him, for doing the common sense thing and help him continue to live the High Life."

The sporting goods store Modell's also will announce Wednesday afternoon at its Times Square location that five percent of all of its Yankees merchandise sales July 13-19 will be donated to Lopez to help pay the taxes and student loans he's accrued.

Lopez has said he owes $100,000 from his days at St. Lawrence University.

According to reports, Lopez received luxury box tickets for the rest of the season (including postseason), signed baseballs, bats and jerseys from Jeter. He also received front-row seats to Sunday's Yankees-Rays game.

Give money to help cure cancer or give money to help a guy who was dumb enough/nice enough to give away something worth over $100,000?
I'm not a tax attorney, but if they give him the money it's income so he has to pay taxes on it.

This is tip money for Jeter.

Russell Martin, RSHDB.

Russell Martin: 'I hate the Red Sox'
By Andrew Marchand
ESPNNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- Adding fuel to baseball's bitterest rivalry, New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin said he hates the Boston Red Sox and would relish adding to their misery by helping to eliminate them from the playoffs during this weekend's series between the two teams.

"Anything to get the Red Sox out would be awesome for me," said Martin, who has been involved in the rivalry for one season.

When asked why, Martin sounded like the truest Bleacher Creature.

"Because I hate the Red Sox," Martin said.

The Yankees entered Thursday night, having already clinched the American League East. Their magic number to gain home-field advantage over the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers was three. It would only be for the American League portion of the playoffs. The National League owns home field in the World Series because of the NL's victory in the All-Star Game.

Last winter, Martin almost went to Boston. The three teams most interested in signing him as a free agent were the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees outbid the other clubs and gave Martin the best chance to start. Martin, 28, got $4 million plus performance bonuses.
Now, he has added a little spice to this weekend, which from the Yankees' side, had lost some of its luster because the AL East race ended Wednesday.

"They are fun to play against because they have a quality team and they are gritty and they play hard and stuff, but I would love to see them lose," Martin said.

When informed of Martin's comments, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he doesn't hate the Red Sox and would prefer not to add intensity to the rivalry.

"I don't ever like to fuel anything," Girardi said. "Boys will be boys."

In his first series against the Red Sox back in April, Martin hit two homers in one game at Fenway in the Yankees' 9-4 win in the second game of the season between the two clubs.

Boston, though, has owned the season series with the Yankees, having taken 11 of 15 games.

"They have given us a hard time all year, but I don't think we are scared of them or anything," Martin said. "If we play them (in the playoffs), we play them."

The Yankees were scheduled to play another AL East foe, the Tampa Bay Rays, on Thursday. The Yankees also go to Tampa for the final three games of the season at the beginning of next week. The Rays and Los Angeles Angels trail the Red Sox by 2 games in the AL wild-card race.

Martin said he doesn't hate the Rays or the Angels.

Martin said his dislike of the Red Sox comes with playing in the Bronx.

"I guess it just comes with the territory," Martin said. "When you wear the pinstripes, you just kind of learn to be that way."

The Red Sox don't need anything to add to their playoff motivation as they will enter playing for their postseason lives.

With the Yankees at 95 victories, Martin also wants to see the Yankees get to triple digits in wins.

"It will be fun to be the spoiler and get 100 wins," Martin said.

AFAIC, Martin was a douche even before he wore the 'stripes but has really shot up the rankings as a MFY. He's also one of those guys who sucks at baseball except in the turns at bat I happen to see or hear. Russel! Shows Muscle!

Google "Suck it, Russell Martin" and you'll see that Giants fans have built a whole sub-culture around gleeful antipathy for the guy.

Fan caught a foulball in Jeter's 3k AB. it's now up for auction! http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/sports/21006095866971/

What's next? This is the patch of dirt Jeter stepped on first after hitting the ball? This is the used starbucks cup he drank before the game? Here's his urine sample from the second inning, here's the needle from the trainers room before the game, he's Suzyn Waldman's saliva from her analysis of the home run..

Cashman's an unfaithful douche (aside from his MFYness). Why is it necessary to expose him, so to speak? Except for learning the GM didn't care for Posada -- not a surprise -- I didn't see any point to any of that. Was he using city funds to get the girlfriend those seats?

If you're ever going to tweet something, now is the time.

Regarding Greg's point, typical douchy Deadspinning, especially the asshole preening with the toothbrush. But if they're going to exist they may as well exist to tear down the MFYs.
