SAN DIEGO -- The Padres landed Marlins outfielder Cameron Maybin, a former first-round Draft pick and top prospect, in a trade on Saturday.

The deal will be announced after Maybin completes a physical, according to a baseball source.

The Marlins, who were seeking bullpen help this winter, will receive right-handed relievers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica in return, MLB.com confirmed.

Marlins Dump Andrew Miller In Trade With Red Sox

The Deal
The Marlins gave lefthander Andrew Miller three years and 220 innings to work out the kinks, but in that time he regressed badly and bottomed out with an 8.54 ERA in 2010. Out of options next season and due a raise from his $1.79 million salary, Miller represented a bad gamble for the cost-conscious Marlins, so they dealt him to the Red Sox, who can afford to take risks with pricey, stunted prospects. Boston sent Triple-A lefty reliever Dustin Richardson, who has two option years remaining, to Florida as compensation.

Perhaps the Red Sox feel emboldened to take a chance on Miller because new pitching coach Curt Young had success crafting some of the Athletics' young lefties, like Gio Gonzalez and Dallas Braden, into successful pitchers. With Boston, Miller also will team with ex-North Carolina teammate and fellow 2006 first-round pick Daniel Bard.

The Marlins and Red Sox came together on a similar trade a year ago, when Florida traded arbitration-eligible outfielder Jeremy Hermida to Boston for a pair of low-ceiling lefties. Hunter Jones, one of those lefties, as well as Hermida both got released during the 2010 season

Oakland's adds Jays 3b Edwin Encarnacion in a waiver acquisition. Incumbent Kevin Kousmanoff has a MUCH better glove, but far less power: EE had 21 homers in something like 50 fewer games than KK played.

Marlins getting rid of Maybin and Miller leaves them nothing to show* for their Miguel Cabrera & Dontrelle Willis trade - definitely a word of caution for the 'dump 'em for prospects' crowd.
And those guys weren't just ordinary prospects either. Both were not only 1st round picks but top ten picks. Maybin was 10th overall in 2005, Miller 6th the following year and only money scares kept him from going even higher.

* The entire trade was Maybin & Miller going to Florida along with Dallas Trahern, Burke Badenhop, Eulogio de la Cruz, and Mike Rabelo - so I guess they still have Bradenhop even though he sounds more like a dance than a pitcher -- let's all do the Bradenhop !!
The deal worked out great for Detroit as far as Cabrera goes. Their only mistake was almost immediately giving Willis a huge extension that they eventually had to eat.

Cameron Maybin, I get the feeling, will play for 10 teams before he's done.

Guys who get traded tend to get traded.

The Marlins got two useful and cheap relievers for Maybin, which isn't nothing. But Maybin had a series of nagging injuries this past year, so I'm a little surprised they were so quick to get rid of him.

Yeah, I shouldn't describe two ML relievers as "nothing" but the point was that they dealt a potential HoF-type bat for two "blue chip" prospects and didn't even get regular play from either guy when the prevailing wisdom on trades like that are that the team 'solved two positions for years to come'

btw, Andrew Miller is out of options meaning that the Sawx can't send him to the minors without exposing him to waivers and he's done nothing to show that he's capable of holding down a steady ML job. It's very possible he'll be somewhere else before too long.

We got to watch Maybin play here in Grand Rapids for a year. Didn't hit for a ton of power, but we don't see too many bombs in the park here. Sure seemed like the real deal.

Can we change this thread title? I don't want a single thread for transactions this year. I think all transactions are Action-Packed enough to merit their own thread.

Here, here! (Where, where?)
The last thing we need is around here are more mindless all-purpose threads.

"Winter Trades?"

Well, if some major trade happens, you could always just start its own thread or spin it off. I'll give you "Offseason Transactions" but I do think there's significant utility in having an all-purpose repository for "minor player traded for minor leaguer" and so on and so forth this offseason.

Aubrey Huff, he of the ridiculous radio interview a few years back, has re-upped with the World Champion San Francisco Chris Russos for 2 years and $22 million.

But will he ever catch the final ball hit in the life of a stadium again?

Delighted the teal reminder of 9/28/08 has left the National League.

And speaking of teal... yeah, were I Alderson, I would have done this... even with the no-arb stipulation.

The Marlins have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Javier Vazquez, pending a physical, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds that the deal will be worth $7 million, with a full no-trade clause and the Marlins can not offer Vazquez arbitration.

Are the Marlins "going for it?" or is this their yearly transaction to make sure they don't get yelled at for stealing money again?

Seems pretty lose-lose for them. Either Vazquez continues to suck like I expect, or he has a good year and will depart for a more lucrative deal and the Marlins don't even get picks out of it.

Dodgers stay busy, get new SS in Juan Uribe for $21 mils over 3 years. If he was older and crappier and more intangiblerier, he could've gotten another 10-14 million per year, easy.

Posted

Well the Vazquez signing suggests that the market for pitchers not named Lee is pretty small, and that's encouraging as we still need starter #5. It looks like Juan Uribe is about to get 3 and 21 from the Dodgers, though, so the same can't be said for middle infielders.

If I was sure we presently had $7M in payroll room, I might feel worse about the situation. The deal produces no long-term benefit, though, and the Marlins aren't in any better short-term shape than we are.

The latter. I suppose they'll likely try to deal him midseason to a contender.

And they're doing what exactly with Raffy Furball - who is signed for another year (at $12 mil) plus an option for 2012?
My guess is that Uribe plays somewhere other than SS - which, if so, would make his signing less attractive than it looks at first blush.
I mean, we are talking about a 31 y/o guy whose .310 OBA in 2010 was 10 points higher than his career average.

The Dodgers have quite a bit of money locked up in infielders. I think Ryan Theriot becomes a non-tender candidate, unless they can arrange a deal for Furcal or Blake.
