Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 National League President Warren Giles established the National League Player of the Month Award in 1958. The first winners were co-winners, with future-Met Willie Mays, sharing the prize with Stan Musial. Not a bad kickoff. The American League was too big, too important, too... too for the Player of the Month Award until 1974. The National League, perhaps feeling a little miffed that their bush league award was suddenly the in thing, raised the stakes the next year with a Pitcher of the Month Award the next season. Chub Feeney had his pride, even if his name was Chub. But, naturally, the Americans added their own Pitcher of the Month award in 1979.Interesting fact: the National League, apparently needing these things to keep interest going mid-season, did not annoint a Player of the Month for the month of April until 1969. The additionally left september off the PotM calendar in 1962 and 1963, from 1965 to 1967, and then 1969 to 1973. I guess unti the American League got in the act, it was OK to be frugal. Once there was another player in the of the Month game, the NL started giving them out like breath mints. It may surprise you --- given the 13-year head start --- that the Mets have won fewer Player of the Month awards than Pitcher of the Month honors. In fact, it's not even close, with the Mets garnering only 12 PlothMs in 48+ years and 20 PiotMs in 35+. But you probably aren't surprised at all.OK, so name these Mets who've won ...of the Month awards. Because people who do data dumps suck, you may guess only one guy for each award shown, citing the award specifically,, and you lose one point for each incorrect guess, while gaining two for each correct one.
