Roy Oswalt wants out of Houston because, let's face it, the Astros suck this year. The Mets seem like a great candidate to make a play for him, considering our desperate need at starting pitcher.

So, figuring this year at approx 1/4 over, that's (.75x15)+16+2 or about $29.25 -- and that's if they go the cheap route and not pick up the option.

You'd be getting a guy on the downside while still paying him for his slipping-into-the-past prime.
He also has a no-trade deal so could pick and choose the clubs he wants and speculation has it that he's not a big city, east-coast kinda guy.

Buster Olney writes today that it won't be easy for the Astros to trade Oswalt:

� Hurdle No. 1: He makes a lot of money. Oswalt is owed about $29 million between now and the end of the 2011 season.

� Hurdle No. 2: Oswalt's health history. He's had back problems and has required injections in order to pitch, so there would be reason for concern about whether he could be physically able to serve out the rest of his contract.

� Hurdle No. 3: Oswalt has a full no-trade clause, which means that if the Astros actually got serious offers for the right-hander, Oswalt could kill the talks. Let's just say, for example, that the Washington Nationals got very aggressive and decided they wanted to want to try to win this year, and that they agreed to a deal for the right-hander; Oswalt could step in and end the discussions, and insist that he only be traded to a team closer to his Mississippi home, like the Rangers or Cardinals or Braves.

All it takes is one aggressive team at the right time and right place to make a deal, but it remains to be seen if that team will emerge. Generally speaking, most of the executives I spoke with on Friday believe that Houston will be very hard to satisfy in an Oswalt trade. "They're not just going to give the guy away," said one GM. We'll see.

Yeah Mejia probably won't have the career of Oswalt but he very well might have the career of Oswalt from this point forward!!

Or, put another way, is Roy Oswalt *Right Now* worth essentially a $29mil/2-yr FA contract (or 3-yrs/$43) AND Jennry Mejia?
I'm not sure he's worth either much less both. And I think Houston would be all over that offer like white on Rice University.

The odds of that being made are remote: lots of money, both have NT clauses, Beltran returning to the scene of his "crime" (leaving via FA), Oswalt reportedly not wanting NE cities, etc., but that's a helluva challenge trade.

I forgot (or maybe didn't realize) just how young Mejia was. He is far too young to to mortgage his future for the immediate infusion Oswalt could provide to Mets rotation. So upon further reflection, I wish to rescind my willingness to trade Mejia and Holt for Oswalt.

I would love to have Oswalt to go with Santana and Pelfrey, but I think trading away Mejia's arm to do it would be folly. I acknowledge I was wrong earlier in this thread and hereby proclaim myself unworthy of consideration for being the Mets GM either now or in the future.

I think he's wrong on both accounts there.
As the Nats, I would NOT give up the top pitching prospect in baseball who i just drafted and signed to much fanfare and who is considered by almost everyone to be ready for the big leagues.
As the Astros, I would accept Mejjia, who still needs work but has potential, because they are not going anywhere this year or next with that cast of players and Oswalt's expiration date is approaching.

Seriously though , if your a Nats fan and after reading and hearing all you have about this kid you'd flip if he was traded. As a mets fan I want to see him stay in the NL East .
