Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I'm picking up way too much buzz out there, not just about letting Jerry go, but about advocating for Larry Bowa. Grass-is-greener is one thing, but this is grass we've seen plenty of, and it's very crabby grass. I see the appeal, but I'd still rank him behind Gary Carter in my list of preferred candidates, and that's saying something.I'd probably rank him behind Bud Harrelson. Didn't he do enough damage in 1985?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Wait, WHAT?Oh, GOD, no.If anything, Bowa's best-- it seems-- with underperforming young players. I'm not sure that there's anyone on our current roster-- Reyes, maybe?-- his Pinella-lite act benefits here.I AM pretty sure he'd strangle Pagan within a few months.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 It's always that way right ?, try and hire the opposite of what you have . Howe for Valentine, Randolph for him....Bowa would provide a quick spurt of energy probably, wouldn't be my choice .
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Yeah, well, that would be just acting on self-loathing.I think history shows that misanthropic maniac Billy Martin was as good as any manager in history (such as Davey Johnson) for a first-year turnaround, but a complete burden after that.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I'd take the rest of the year off.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Assuming such a managerial maneuver is true, it would appear the Mets ownership are determined to destroy the team and alienate the Mets' fans. Please let this be the managerial equivalent of a WAT rumor.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I don't know what you mean by true, but it's just something people on the internets are advocating. It's nothing Jeff Wilpon has shared with me, I assure you.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 If the Mets want to hire a psychotic nutjob, they already have Wally Backman in house.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Being with Lord Joe surely has made Bowa not only a better manager but a better person.

If that's a top criterion, I wonder why they haven't called me yet.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Since someone else brought up his name in this thread, there are rumors that St. Joe will not be out in La La land beyond this year (ownership issues, conflict with Colletti, maybe). You just know that if he's unemployed and there is a Met opening the Harper/Klapisch/Madden wing of the NY media will be all over it.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 WE WANT BOBBY V!..but please, not Bowa!

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I think Bowa could have the same type of success as Mets manager as he had as a Mets player.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 You know, I'm sick of seeing retreads wind up with managing jobs. Hell, I'd give it to Mattingly just to piss off the MFY fans.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 We can do better than to give a guy his first job just to not give it to a retread.Willie Randolph, of course, was a first-time manager, as indeed have been six of 15 non-interim Mets managers
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Three of the four Mets pennant-winning managers were retreads.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Steve Phillips on with Francesa when asked about Valentine hesitated before saying he was the wrong person to ask about Bobby. Then made the point that if there was change it woul,dn't be Valentine because hiring from outside would force the Mets to go through an interview process with other candidates or risk a fine and pissing of MLB.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Typical to want to replace a laid-back type with a firebrand, and vice versa. My preference is a former catcher with coaching credentials (attached to Bobby V): John Stearns.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Yeah, well, that rule makes no sense. A team that makes a change mid-season has no time for a prolonged and open process to conduct a dog-and-pony show. The Mets have conducted their last five years under black managers, have dedicated their rotunda to a hero of racial integration, and should happily eat the fine if that's the move they want to make.

If they wanted Bobby they'd either just hire him, or do the usual sham interviews for a couple of days and then hire him. Phillips should finish grinding his axe and sit on it.

Sorry about that.
