Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 There apparently is. His name is Bay.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Flushing, NY (AP) -- The New York Mets have placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hip flexor. Bay, who only a few hours earlier had agreed to a four-year, $66 million contract with the team, injured the hip holding the elevator for general manager Omar Minaya after their contract meeting."It's certainly a disappointment," Bay said through his agent. "But I'm hoping that the surgery goes well, and I should be back on the field in time for the 2011 season."Minaya was not concerned. "It's certainly not what you want to see out of a guy you just signed, but we'll have our doctors take a look at it, and I'm sure Jason will be healthy soon."Minaya also noted that the Mets signed 46-year-old lefthanded pitcher Terry Mulholland, who hasn't pitched since 2006, to a guaranteed one-year deal.

Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Mulholland? Didn't they have the number for Dave Dravecky's agent?I like the Zambrano idea. Apparently they're reassembling the 2006 Venezuelan WBC team - Santana, Frankie, Escobar, Blanco and Fonzie are already in camp. I'll pass on the return of Freddy Garcia, though.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 It looks like Bay wore number 38 as a Pirate and number 44 as a Red Sock.I can't remember if the Mets currently have either of those numbers available.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Thirty-eight, which has been a festival of failure and injury since Skip Lockwood first got hurt 30 years ago, is now the property of the rehabbing Fernando Nieve.Wearing forty-four as an outfielder is really challenging fate, but I spoke recently with the number, and it says it would love to hop on Bay's back, and get the Tim Reddiing vibe out of its system.
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Put him in 8 and be done with it.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Put him in 8 and be done with it.[/quote:3stplutj]I like that idea. And let's give Henry Blanco number 24. No more semi-retired numbers! WOOOOOOO!
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 For all I know 8 is the number he really wanted but couldn't get in Pittsburgh (Stargell) and Boston (Yaz). 38 and 44 look like numbers a guy would substitute for 8 if he couldn't get it.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Do the Red Sox get Steve Reed or Jason Middlebrook in return -- or both?
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Jason Bay, former Phantom-Met.Like FK, I am fascinated that how this news unfolded. How did Francesa scoop everyone else? And how could he be so confident that he sat on the news for 24 hours. This is just mind-boggling. I would love to hear an explanation on this. Kudos to Mike for actually having news after that kind of hype. If this were "the Mets are adding a wing to CitiField", it would have been lamer than lame.I'm glad they brought in Bay. He looks like a good hitter. Although at that price, and for 5 years (after the vest) I would have preferred Holliday, but it is what it is. Now trade Franceour, get a first-baseman, sign a SP and let's go to war.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Seawolf gets an A....very good.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I don't like it. I've soured alot on Bay after reading about his terrible defense and would have rather saved the money for next year or paid Holliday
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I wholeheartedly approve. Excellent move. His bat makes the lineup potent and protects Carlos (we only have one now) and David. Between Bay and Molina, the Mets have signed two players from my championship fantasy team so Omar is obviously signing players that know how to win.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Take this how you like but there are reports of Zambrano to the Mets involving a third team....
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 and protects Carlos (we only have one now)then go get the other one back, way better than bringing molina in

Guest Kong76 Guests Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 From another thread ...K76: Doesn't this happen every year? The Mets are closed the Friday before Xmas and won't bere-opening until the Monday after New Years. Unfortunately, the papers will still be selling papers. <<<
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 How's about a little shoulder action?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 The Boston Red Sox apparently didn't want to sign a long-term contract with Bay because of some health concerns about Bay's shoulders holding up. But meanwhile they still offered him 4 years at $60 mil.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 MM: The Mets do not want to embarrass themselves by confirming a deal then having to back away should Bay not pass the physical <<<It's subtle cracks like this that just grind my goat horns. Why not just come out and say it ... after many seasons ending in disaster,a pissed off fan base, the beloved Yankees World Championship, ownershipthat often looks stoopid, front office scandals, an injury riddled team thatneeds a serious medical staff upgrade, a stadium that belongs in Brooklyn,Pete Flynn's dandruff problem, etc. the Mets simply can't afford to crap thebed on this one where other teams would announce the signing and leap willynilly into a four-five year deal with just a few wind sprints to see if he canactually breathe and run at the same time.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 There have been six Maple Leaf Mets, but none since 1973, if'n' you believe that nonsense. The last was Brian Ostrosser --- 0-5 in 1973. Canada's overdue to contribute to the great cause.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 As per Cerrone:Host Mike Francesa ended his show on WFAN last Tuesday saying he would soon have a Mets update, and he later broke news that the Mets and Jason Bay had agreed to a four-year deal.Today, Francesa is at it again, opening his show by saying, I think youll be getting some more Mets news here later in the week, but well get to that later in the show Jason Bay press conference is tomorrow, but theres more to come.Either pitching's comin', or Eli's comin'. Either way, I yams nervouses.
