and speaking of beltran...

from my fantasy league's player update:

Beltran, who was fitted with a custom brace for his surgically repaired right knee during his April 20 follow-up exam at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo., hopes to begin running in a week, ESPN New York reports.
Spin: During his visit to Dr. Steadman last month, Beltran had to stop running because of the intense discomfort. Beltran acknowledged he likely will wear a brace when he returns and he is not 100 percent. He's swinging at underhand pitches at the moment and there is no specific timeframe for his return.
Tue, May 4

hopefully this isn't anything to worry about, but:
according to Burkhardt:

Pelfrey skipped his bullpen today as a precaution. Jerry says it was Warthen's call and that Pelfrey felt ok and will indeed start Friday.

I think you need to have a turn to have a return.

Well, THAT was money well spent by the Mets.

Why Omar and various placed medical staff members still have a job after this I don't know.

Oh c'mon.
Fans call for teams to take risks on players all the time with no guarantee as to how they'll turn out.
They'll then pick on the ones that don't work out and act as if the outcome was known all along and that it's their money being paid to the guy.

Yeah, I don't think that's a waste at all. You put your money on three numbers, and if one hits, you've played well, and the losses on the other two are a small part of doing business.

You could argue that Omar misread the market early on and jumped to sign guys who weren't better bets than what was available in late January. But to be fair, our pen looks pretty good on the whole and we still have Parnell and Calero in the minors and Igarashi on the DL. Ultimately Minaya paid a good price overall for what he's gotten from the pen so far; it's just that some of the bargains have worked out a lot better than Escobar wound up doing.

Iggy with a good outing in St. Lucie, Buffalo calling. Takahashi's apparently in for Friday, and Dickey allegedly with a locker nameplate already in advance of Wednesday (when the Mets will be in a different clubhouse). Presumably Niese to the DL.

What's the skinny on Reyes?

The bit I gleened from various reports last night seems to be that merely a stiff back, he wanted to play, Manuel didn't want him to play, probably be reevaluated today. Suspect he'll take some swings and go from there.

Same with Pagan, as per Manuel, except supposedly Pagan will have no chance at playing today. If he feels good in BP, he'll play tomorrow.

I'd doubt with the long plane ride, etc that Josejose would play today.

seems a reasonable assumption.

quote on Metsblog about Reyes. seems like mostly precautionary. Reyes says it's more the side than the back.

Jose Reyes expected to bat exclusively righthanded upon his return.

Beltran playing full nine-inning games in center now.

Perhaps he can play a particularly deep short.

Glad we didn't cut loose Jeff Francoeur this morning.

Tatis has shoulder surgery
SAN FRANCISCO -- Utility man Fernando Tatis underwent potentially career-ending surgery Wednesday to repair the labrum in his right shoulder.
The Mets transferred Tatis from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room for outfielder Carlos Beltran on their 40-man roster.

Tatis, 35, was hitting .185 with two home runs in 65 at-bats as the team's primary right-handed pinch-hitter and backup first baseman. A strong candidate for the 2008 National League Comeback Player of the Year award, Tatis originally separated his shoulder in September of that season. Opting for rehab over surgery at the time, Tatis has played in varying degrees of discomfort ever since.

Last month, the Mets finally placed him on the disabled list with a right shoulder AC joint sprain. Tatis is unlikely to return this season and, at 35 years old, may face an uphill climb to return at all.

Reyes has a "strained" right oblique muscle which causes him pain when swinging left handed. He reaggrivated it on this play throwing Troy Glaus out from deep in the hole on July 10th and had to be a late scratch from the line up for yesterday's game in San Francisco. Hopefully, he will heal quickly be able to return to switch hitting in the near future.

The explanation for this injury makes no sense.

Unless it's supremely localized, a right oblique injury would hamper a righty swing/throw-- or at least, be affected by it-- just as much as a lefty swing/throw. Baseball motions necessitate twisting violently no matter which way you're twisting.

There's plenty of precedent for baseball injuries that hamper a player from one side of the plate and not the other.

And he's not cursed.

Let's talk about Fernando Tatis, whose career probably just ended.

He is injury prone at minimum.

Yes, and you predicted he'd never play another game for the Mets.

Perspective and a lack of persective can both be contageous.

I forgot, you know all..

I just think it's pretty crazy to expect him to be useful from the right side vs righties when he's spent his career *not* hitting them from that side.

I'd prefer to DL him retro to before all-star and see how rest helps.

Gotta go with duan here.
I could quote myself from the series right before the break, and I love quoting myself, but I won't.
We need him at 100% for the long haul.
