Alex Rodriguez Struck by Batting Practice Line Drive, Out of Lineup Yankees star Alex Rodriguez was struck by a line drive and had to be helped off the field during batting practice before Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Rodriguez was taking grounders at third base when new acquisition Lance Berkman drilled a ball that struck Rodriguez in the lower left leg. Rodriguez reportedly was talking to Fox announcer Joe Buck when he was hit. Rodriguez limped toward center field then went to the ground as his teammates waved for the Yankees' medical staff. He stayed down for about five minutes before limping off the field alongside trainer Gene Monahan and heading into the clubhouse. A short time later, Rodriguez was scratched from the starting lineup for Saturday's game, with Ramiro Pena inserted in his place. The Yankees called his injury a lower leg contusion and subsequent X-rays came back negative. Berkman has two hits in 19 at-bats since joining the Yankees last weekend. He apologized to Rodriguez on the field and later told reporters he hoped the third baseman wouldn't be out long. "It's my contribution to the Yankees so far -- not the greatest," Berkman said.

It's in Fox's contract that there can never be less than 2 cameras on A-Rod while he's in uniform.

Why'd he limp towards CF? What'd he think, maybe if the balls he was too slow to catch wouldn't hurt as hard out there?

FOX's Joe Buck reveals that ARod was looking away from BP for a brief second when he got hit, and the reason he was looking away is that he was saying hello to FOX's Joe Buck.
Buck didn't say whether it was he who distracted Rodriguez or if ARod simply saw a media member and figured it was someone to suck up to (and, really, either one is easily believable) but the point is that he turned around too late to field Berkman's low liner.
Meanwhile, as if Yanqui fans didn't already have enough reason to be suspicious of Berkman - what with his 2-for-21 start, his non 'TY' status, and because half of them had never heard of him before* now on account of his NL status - this just knocks him down a few more pegs on their totem pole.

On the way home from work yesterday I put on FAN. I was only half-listening to Francesa drone on about the game. Then he starts talking about "Bergman"...he mentions the name about a half dozen times, and I'm thinking it's some shlub they must have called up from the minors before I realize he's talking about Lance Berkman. Terrible news for him physically, but if it saves him the formality of retiring, he can stay on the DL next year and keep getting paid.

Sean Green's rehab time is over but the Mets are keeping him at Buffalo (as he had an option). Another victim of the Mets refusing to cut Oliver Perez.
