And now the actual release, posted at mets.com:

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The New York Mets today announced they will wear a new pinstripe home uniform next season inspired by the early years of the franchise. The design combines new and old elements of Mets uniforms. The Mets created the retro uniform following research and positive responses to the jerseys the 1969 World Champion Mets wore during their 40th anniversary celebration in August.

The natural color and pinstripes were staples of the original Mets uniform when the team debuted in 1962. The Mets will also continue to wear their white uniform at home with the black jerseys as an alternate.

The new pinstripe jerseys will go on sale this Friday, November 27 at the Mets Team Store at Citi Field and will kick off the store's special Thanksgiving Sale. The jersey will also be available the same day on Mets.com.

From 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the new pinstripe jersey will be 20 percent off, Season Ticket Holders will receive 40 percent off all regularly priced merchandise, and all fans will get 35 percent off regularly priced merchandise. The new pinstripe jersey will be 15 percent off from 10:00 a.m. until the store closes at 5:00 p.m. After 10:00 a.m., the following schedule will apply for regularly priced items:

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: 30 percent off
12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: 25 percent off
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: 20 percent off

The sale continues Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29 with fans receiving 20 percent off regularly priced merchandise, and 10 percent off the new pinstripe jersey with a purchase of $200 or more. The Mets Team Store, located next to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the holiday season.

Beginning Friday, November 27, the new jersey will also be available at Modell's Sporting Goods stores; the Mets Clubhouse stores at the Roosevelt Field Mall and on 42nd Street across from Bryant Park in Manhattan; and Keyspan Park in Brooklyn.

The new is supposed to recall this one?[/quote:1ax277q5]

I suppose so...and look how much better it is without the drop-shadow.

Who makes these decisions...?!

Aesthetically, the organization's seems committed to designing horses by committee.

Maybe change the team name to "Camels"?

...I'm wondering again why the Mets didn't dress like that on some semi-regular basis in 2009, which was the 40th anniversary of 1969 -- or even once, the night the '69ers were there.[/quote:10zlc1gf]

I'm guessing because it didn't occur to them until too late. It didn't occur to any of us.

Crossed my mind fleetingly once or twice, FWIW. I figured they were saving it up for August 22.

Which will make it appropriate for MK's final Bar Mitzvah gift. And it won't have the friggin' pizza patch, so that's good.

I'm trying to see how those differ so greatly from last year's pinstripes. I know they say the color is "natural", but that pic makes it look nothing close to the beautiful cream-colored tops the 69'ers wore.

Disappointed as of now.

I don't get it. Is this the only change for 2010?

Going from bright white to almost bright white?[/quote:ewiqex17]

Addition-by-subtraction: no more pizza or cap patches.

And if these uniforms are so worth rising early for on Friday morning to score murky discounts on (it's like Gold/Silver pricing in November), then how come the Mets didn't do a fashion show a la the Twins and other teams who've introduced new looks? Keep Omar the bleep away from it lest he attempt to answer a question, but get one of those Bravo hosts to emcee. Fly in Francoeur or Pagan or whoever. Make a hot stove day of it. I don't know that they're not planning that for later on, but if you anticipate this as your big sales weekend, why not now?

If Tina Mannix's marketing instincts are this sharp, I can't wait to see her Hall of Fame ballot.

I would guess that the Mets intended to do such a show but couldn't pull it off in time for sales programs that were already revved for "Black Friday." It's odd that word leaked that the new unis would be revealed on Nov 27 only for the Mets to acknowledge they would show them in December instead. I'm sure the Mets let Fritz Modell have the final say.

Because whenever I see black drop shadows on a Met uniform, the first thing I think of are the '69 Mets. Yeah right, Fred. Whatever you say. I hope the Mets thought to issue cream colored pants to match these new alternates.

In other news, the Mets announced that they will be retaining their wildly popular black home and road jerseys. According to the Mets super secret fan poll that no one but Fred Wilpon is allowed to audit, Met fans voted the black top jerseys as their favorite Met uniforms of all time. "And they make the perfect tribute to the 1969 season", said Wilpon, noting that the black jerseys evoke instant memories of black cats and black shoe polish.

Like I've mentioned before, I don't like the pinstripe jersey, and I really won't like it now that it's cream-colored. Retro uniforms are fun as a special event, but I don't see the point in wearing them regularly.

But I do agree that if you are going to do a retro-jersey, make it look like the actual jersey. The drop shadow there is pretty dumb.

And I know no one here thinks so, but the black uniforms are popular. They remain one of the best-sellers, which is why they are still around. I've said before, I don't mind them. I don't mind the drop-shadow either.

I wouldn't miss the black uniforms if they were gone. They don't offend me either. I prefer home whites and road grays, sans drop shadows.

What bothers me more is that they are wearing road uniforms that say "METS" on them instead of "New York." Call me old school but I think the road uniform should show the name of the city/state the team represents.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I have long believed the "best-seller" aspect of the black Mets merchandise is more due to a flooding of the market. Especially in the early part of this decade black stuff was everywhere. If you wanted something for your kid, it had to be black. It seems to me that's changed a bit in recent years, but I remember infuriating trips to the Mets store in Manhattan where I could not find a decent shirt in white or blue for my kids.

Also, if you are going to have a cream-colored retro jersey, you better have cream-colored retro pants. Ones that stop just below the knee showing your glorious blue stirrups. All blue hat. No orange dot.

I'm with FMan. Away jerseys should say New York.

Unis in my order of preference:

Home White
Away Gray
Home Black
Away Black (with NY on the front)
Pinstripe Home
Pinstripe Home Retro
Racing Stripes
Mercury Mets

On Edit: And to be clear, since there is a lot of negativity in this thread, I really like the home whites and away grays. In fact, I wouldn't change a thing about them. To me, they are the best two jerseys in baseball.

I actually like the black unis.

Road grey is my favourite , really classic looking. I don't mind the black but I really dislike "Mets" on the road uni. It's like Samuels is saying FU and doing what he wants.

Mercury Mets unis not only rank behind any combo of white, black, pinstripe, plus the various retros that pop up from time to time, but also trail Scottish kilts, bunny outfits, Payne Stewart-style golf knickers, and most of the combined wardrobes of Lady Ga-Ga, Amy Winehouse, and Bjork.
