A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Quality starts?! In my day, it was wins and losses, not these new-fangled, algebra problems dressed up as baseball statistics.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Google Books has most every Baseball Digest available in fairly wieldy navigation form. Plenty of issues from the '70s and '80s. I discovered BD in 1972 and at one point owned every issues from 1974 to 1988.go to: books.google.comEnter: Baseball Digest (first choice that comes up)Click on: Browse All IssuesYou'll find: A listing of every decade from 1940 to 2000Click on: Any decade you like; you'll find thumbnails for every available issue in that spanGo: Nuts
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I can't find browse all issues.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Reading their picks for the hot rookies of 1951. Barely mentioned as also-rans: Gil McDougald and shortstop Mickey Mantle. Not mentioned at all: Willie Mays.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 That is very cool, Fafif ... thanks.

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 See, the thread title made me think that the Mets had acquired Jonathan Broxton.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 And I thought the first joke would be about El Sid.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I used to like the "Rookie Reports" issue each year. I'd always get my hopes up. For example, the one on Bud Harrelson said "Good power for a shortstop". Then, I saw him play. Then, I stopped buying Baseball Digest. But for a long time, it was the only place you could find semi-up-to-date rosters.Later

Little did they know who else O.J. Simpson was capable of hurting.Tom Seaver also appeared on the inaugural February 1970 issue of the short-lived pulpy "Score Magazine". I can't find a decent picture of that issue on the web and I don't subscribe to any web-hosting image storing sites, but here's an active ebay link to a pending auction for that mag:http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-1970-SCORE-SPORTS-MAGAZINE-TOM-SEAVER-METS_W0QQitemZ370254240477QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Sports_Memorabilia?hash=item5634df5add
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Thanks, if I find it I'll post something from it next. If I don't, I guessI'll have to make an offer on it lol.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Kong's got the best junk in his trunk.I remember reading that article in 1976, somewhat surprised the Mets would cop to Shea Stadium having been "skid row" for home run hitters. Guess they could admit it once they had a legitimate slugger.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 But no Met has ever done what Coleman is about to do.Prophetic words from Bob "Soft Rain" Klapisch.I will take Ron Darling's assessment of leaders with many grains of salt after reading this.

As the late '90s and early '00s would prove, it was preferable.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 There was no Photoshop in 1969, so they must have actually sent a guy in a Braves uniform to the moon in order to get that shot.
