Could The Mets Really Carry Three Catchers???

Recommended Posts

Schnide is ready and it seems neither Castro or Omir are going anywhere. As best I can tell, none of the three plays another position. That's a big commitment to #2.

Worse ideas are out there. But there are a lot of options, including trading one of the three.

It helps that the Schneid hits lefty.

Jack LaLanne could.

I have a feeling that they're going to bubble-wrap Castro's immense cranium and ship it elsewhere.

Yeah, I think Castro is the guy to go.

(not sure they can bubble wrap that head though ... CBA)

I was thinking of just literally shipping him somewhere eliminating the
headache of them having to figure out what to do.

He probably would, and they wouldn't have any salary to potentially eat, but I think after 4+ seasons the Mets are just tired of looking at Castro.

Oh, I'm tired of looking at him too, but he's allegedly a good clubhouse guy, and if someone else thinks Santos is a long-term solution, then I'd say we sell high.

The between-innings SNY tease said "Mets on verge of a trade?" ... which could mean anything from moving a catcher to some silly rumor that barely qualifies for discussion.

Swannie says the Mets are shopping their righthanded catchers to the White Sox.

Gavin Floyd has been stinking it up. Maybe they can pry him loose to replace Redding.

Trading or demoting Santos to make room for Schneider makes no sense to me.

Santos has been a spark. Schneider is a schlub.

The thinking probably is:

1. Trade Castro.
2. If no trade, send down Santos. Let Castro go at the end of the season and replace him with Santos next year.

Outside the box options:

1. Keep three catchers and send down Sean Green (note that Earl Weaver was a big believer in having three catchers, but times have changed and it's better to have the extra bullpen arm).
2. Trade Schneider. You could get more for him than Castro. Of course, that means Castro might walk this fall and you're stuck with one catcher. Also, teams would want to see if Schneider was healthy, so you'd have to send down Santos until the trade was made.

I don't see how the Mets can possibly send Santos down the way he's hit in big spots the last week. Options or not, that's just some dumb shit.

Of course, dumb shit is in Omar's wheelhouse.

Doesn't Pagan sort of make Jeremy Reed or Fartinez redundant? They could shave an OF and keep Castro as an RH pinch-hitter.
