Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Fast Times probably deserves my vote, but man I went through a phase where I loved the Police Academy flicks. Chalk one up to sentimental memories of junior high and joshing about the Blue Oyster Bar.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I'm scratching my head at how Police Academy made it to the brackets, never mind that it has 4 votes....
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I wouldn't vote for either of these films under normal circumstances. But as between them, Fast Times has more iconic value than Police Academy.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 How is this even close? Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Eric Stoltz, Nick (Coppola) Cage. This film should be a lock for tthe Final Four."Hey, there's no party for me in here.""No shirt, no shoes....no dice.""Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus, so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too!"And so many. many more.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I have to skip this one. I did see Fast Times but it made no impression on me. I remember nothing about it. And I'm not sure whether or not I saw Police Academy. I'm thinking probably not.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I remember one scene from Fast Times really, really well. In fact, I think there was a period of time I couldn't stop thinking about it...
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Perhaps you're thinking of the scene which makes you think that "Kevin Kline is a lucky man."
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 This should be an absolute blowout, but, apparently, it isn't.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Neither of these would even remotely qualify as great cinema, but Fast Times at Ridgemont High is definitely the better of the two.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a classic. Police Academy is just a dumb movie. Now if it had been Massacre at Central High...
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Sure, all you chardonnay-swilling elitists who can only say "film" and not "movie" will prefer Fast Times. You'll always pick the movie with the teenage boy masturbating because somehow that's art. But let me ask you, how many sequels did Fast Times at Ridgemont High spawn? None. TV series? None. Cartoons? None. Nicknames for Mets pitchers? None. Police Academy is definitely the cultural touchstone of the 80's.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Man, culture is definitely in the shitter when Fast Times is the choice of chardonnay-swilling elitists. On the other hand, it may just be laziness that Grant Roberts was never nicknamed Spicoli.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 What Mets pitcher got a nickname from Police Academy?

I believe Ray Walston and Vincent Schiavelli were the only members of the movie cast to make the transition to the TV show. It sucked, also, if I recall.
