Oliver Perez

Resign him? I'm willing to spend a lot of Fred's money next year. Look at the contracts that got signed this past offseason --- pitching's expensive. Money's coming off the books in 2009.

From a performance standpoint, I hope they do it just because it's hard to find suitable starting pitchers on the FA market.

From a personal standpoint, it's a no-brainer because the dude is my favorite player in the sport right now. Outstandingly entertaining blend of talent and quirk.

I think you have to sign him.

Santana, Maine, Perez and Pelfrey could be a very formidable front 4. And they're all young.

Two lefties!!!

Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Church, (Murphy?) Makes for a very good young core.

I'll wait to vote until the season doesn't implode like last year, thank you.

Buckets and boatloads can change down the stretch.

And there will also be a certain MIL pitcher who they probably can't afford
on the menu who might deserve more buckets and boatloads.

Too early to think about it.

I don't know what other free agent to be pitcher (not counting the big ticket guys that the Mets aren't expected to go after like Sabathia) has the upside of what O.P. can do when he's on a roll like he has been.

One thing that can be said for Perez is that he flourished, at times, under
two totally different pitching coaches now with the Mets. Maybe he's got all
the glitches worked out.

Like I said, if this thread is still around in November ....

Wuss. You're allowed to change your opinion later.

I want to be on record as being uncommitted, I probably won't
be around later.

And do it now, get it over with.

The problem there is that Mr. Boras isn't going to agree to that - not with the prospect of having dozens of teams in on the bidding at the end of the season.
He ALWAYS takes his players to FA-gency

Boras also tends to stretch it out as long as things will go which can make for anxious moments on the way. Let's hope Omar's successor has a Boras counterattack in mind.

i think both Sabathia and Sheets are free agents, though i expect milwaukee to keep one of them.

The way C. C. is smacking the NL around, I have to find out his price before talking to anybody of lesser stature. That being said, Ollie is presently pitching like someone I would like back.

Excellent. Since when have we started acknowledging there are some youngish players on the Mets?

If the season ended today -- yes, I would be backing up the Brinks truck.

I have to worry about Sabathia's, umm, physique. If it took 5 years to get Sabathia, I might pass.

Sabathia "physique" is a bit of an issue, but i think less for a pitcher than a position player, David Wells pitched effectively into his 40's with a similiar body.

Sabathia has a good chance of dragging up the salaries of lesser pitchers, so if you want Oliver Perez bad, it's best to move sooner rather than later.

I just don't think (BorasBoras) that such a strategy will work.

I can see the MFY's going hard for Perez , he's young , has had success against them , Hank will demand him.

The Mets tried to sign Perez to an extension before his arbitration. He and Boras would have nothing of it. I doubt they'd talk extension now with Ollie's value higher than ever. I think that Perez is actually worth more to the Mets than other teams, since he owns Atlanta, Philly and the Yankees: 3 teams that make up more than a quarter of their schedule every year. Unless he's looking for a Zito/Santana type deal, I think the Mets should try to keep him.

I'm a little wary about Sabathia. He's second in the league in pitcher abuse points this year, and with a month an a half left to go has racked up enough to be in the top 8 of most full seasons. The Brewers are (correctly) treating him like a rented mule, and I wouldn't want to be the team that has to pay him 20 million dollars a year from 2011-14. (Jeez, those dates sure seem like they're WAY off in the future, don't they?)

i'm not putting a price I'd be willing to pay on Perez yet.
But there's NO reason the mets can't be in on Sabathia. Rotation wise Maine & Pelfry are still cheap for a year & Pedro's salary is coming off the books. For the last number of years we've had at least 2 very upper end pitching salaries no reason why we can't next year.

There's a lot of baseball still to be played.

I don't think the Mets have written off Pedro yet, though all of you may have. I woudn't be shocked to see him get a two-year deal (or one plus an option) to finsih his career alternating between the back end of the Mets rotation and the front end of their disabled list.

Lot of baseball still to be played.

Pedro as far as I'm concerned is more than welcome hit the bricks when this deal is up. Thanks for that one year. Take care.

I understand. I'm just not sure that's where the Mets are. Nor should they make a decision either way now.

I'm still thinking that folks are hanging onto post-Santana-deal assessments of the Mets' minor league system and it's really progressed throughout the season.

I don't mind taking the same kind of flyer on Pedro that we did with Moises back in winter of '06. Good but not great money, with an option .

No problemo. But don't want to spend $15 million on him.
