Luis Castillo's Pipp Flexor

The way Easley has been tearing it up of late, Castillo may have difficulty getting back into the line up upon his return. With Church and Alou both out, the Mets need all the offense they can find. There is still a week left on Castillo's 15 day DL, but I'm not sure the Mets can afford to take Easley's bat out of the line up when Castillo rejoins the team.

As long as Easley stays hot, I say ride him as far as you can and use Castillo as a late inning defensive sub.

So Argenis Reyes is a younger, healthier, and cheaper version of Castillo.

And if that's true, then that's a good thing to have. (An Utley or an Uggla would be better, of course, but not many teams have second basemen like those.)

The Mets don't necessarily benefit from the "cheaper" because they're paying Castillo anyway. And with three years left on his contract, Castillo would be very difficult to unload to another team.

So what happens? Is he an expensive reserve infielder behind Easley and then A. Reyes until he gets released some time during the 2011 season? Or will there be some kind of a perfect storm that will cause there to be some team that has a need at second at a time when Castillo is the best guy available?

(This is all going under the assumption that Castillo won't get his regular job back. I think he will, but probably not through the end of 2011.)

I can't see how he's a reserve infielder, because he only plays second base. He's not exactly a super utility guy. When he's back, he plays.

And I don't know if that's a bad thing; I know his injuries don't exactly make him the most reliable option, but when he's on, he's pretty good. I know we all want Ryne Sandberg, but realistically, Castillo's not a terrible guy to have in your lineup.

But if it turns out that Argenis Reyes is that guy, (and it's way too early to say that for sure) then that day will come well before Castillo's contract runs out.

You can have a one- position backup guy as long as the guy he's backing up (Easley) is versatile.

That's not ideal, but over the shorthaul, it can work.

Haven't heard much about Castillo's progress for quite a while. His 15 days on the DL were up on July 18th. The Mets are obviously in no hurry to get him bach since Easley and A. Reyes have done so well in his absence.

Castillo has 3 years remaining at $ 6 Mil. per season left on his contract. I doubt that the Mets plan on eating his contract and they likely can't trade it away unless they get extremely lucky. So what have they been doing with him. Is he rehabbing in the minors somewhere?

teach him to play the outfield and he may just find his way into that sad rotation out there.
