He takes over a team on a two-game bicoastal winning streak. Heck, if Easley comes through in Game One of the doubleheader, the Mets are on a four-game run.

He's an interim manager (fifth in Mets History, I think, after Parker, McMillan, Howard, and Cubbage).

I guess we'll see if the Mets are about to kick off an in-season search.

Maybe they'll clarify at the press conference today. Wouldn't it be just like them to be noncommittal, and leave Manuel stringing along just like Willie was?

Could mean either, I guess. Frank Howard took over on June 4th and rode the rest of the way, but that was a team with few illusions of "getting back into it" (as if they were ever in it), and no wild card to stoke those illusions.

Don't read ANYTHING into it, but in 1978 Billy Martin got shitcanned, now I don't know off hand if Lemon was enroute, or they just fired Martin without any sort of backup in place (that probably is the best bet) so Dick Howser managed a game for the 1978 Yankees.

The Capital Punisher, I think, was a dark horse, but not a serious candidate. Davey Johnson invited him to be on his staff with deference, suggesting that he understood that Howard might have felt slighted.
