David Wright Loves Authority

Wrapped up in USF-Rutgers last night, I didn't take more than passing notice of David Wright's presence on the RU sideline (only my alma mater's fleeting No. 2 ranking could obscure such an otherwise welcome offseason sight). He was standing with Michael Strahan and was eventually interviewed by ESPN's Erin Andrews. Of course the second question (after Wright said he loves Rutgers when Virginia Tech isn't playing) was about Torre, and Wright gave an answer that indicates how much he cherishes authority: that it's great that the Yankee players spoke up for Joe, just like it's great we spoke up for Willie or wanted him back or something.

I know his dad is in law-enforcement and David's a good kid and all, but there was something chilling about his kneejerk invocation of sticking up for familiar authority figures that was slightly chilling. It could also be read as loyalty, but quite frankly I don't care what David Wright thinks about Joe Torre. He should have said "Erin, I'm a Met, y'know? We got our own problems."

He'll never say that.

How do you draw "cherishes authority" from that? Slightly chilling?
Kneejerk invocation? Seems a little over-dramatic.

I'd have expected nothing else form Wright, don't like that he's pals with Strahan though. Still can't be around enough winners I suppose.

I'm with Greg. His eagerness to tell people what he thinks they want to hear from him is kinda creepy. Not that I want any deep thinkers on my team.

It depends on how much you want to read into what a jock says during the
off-season at a college football game. Fafif sounds to me is that he has a pre-
conceived notion and he was just looking for another example to back that up.
I guess my feeling is that there's too much Reyes/Wright personality bashing
going on and people are looking for places to chuck darts.

He answered a direct question which is something that there are complaints
about with other figures who side-step everything.

Strahan has participated in Wrights Foundations fundraising events.

(edited for clarity)

Crap, I didn't realize I wasn't signed on as myself.

Thanks for link, seems pretty vanilla to me. No authority cherishing.

Bingo. Tells them what they want to hear describes it very well.

Sounds like a certain despised short stop on the other side of town, and not the one currently contracted to play 3rd over there.

you really have to work overtime, bend over backwards, etc etc, to find reasons to bash our franchise player.

Who said I'm bashing him?

i guess that would put to rest any talk about him preferring dick's.

Another plausible position is that, with Torre twisiting in the wind, the Yankee players were defying authority, supporting him in the face of the only remaining authority that mattered, the one that wrote their checks and pimped them out. And that Wright stood with them.

Wright really would have been sucking up with a statement like, "It's Mr. Steinbrenner's team, it's up to him how to run it, and I've always admired his competitiveness and detemination to win."

A lot of folks have said as much --- Ms. Met for one --- probably some who've been fired by Steinbrenner.

David Wright enjoys intermediate authority figures.

Elster - "My take is that this is all very ridiculous."

I agree with you, but things are terribly slow on the baseball front and people are looking for virtually anything Mets related to discuss.
