Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 i just don't know why i do this to myself... i really don't.the joy i get from seeing the Mets win is greatly exceeded by the pain i feel when they lose. i should just stop it. just walk away, and never look back.but i can't.somebody help me....
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Liking baseball is what gets us through this kinda t-orture. If it were only about liking the mets, I'd have given up a while ago since this team is very hard to like.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Just remember, the sweet is never as sweet without the sour, and we all know the sour. As an aside, I was walking up the stairs this morning with my boss. I stumbled a bit just as we reached the landing. My boss said, "You look like your Mets." Grrr.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I have so much shit going on, personally, professionally, and last night the thing that was keeping me up was the fucking Mets and their miserable loss.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Well look at you. Mr. Important Me. Mr. I Have a Lot of Personal and Professional Shit Going On.You think you're better than us unemployed and unloved Met fans?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 They're driving me crazy too. My 10 year-old is getting grief at school for being a Mets fan.He said "Dad, what's wrong with them, why are they losing?! They are supposed to be good and I'm getting teased about it"I told him basically what MonkeyMan said - You can't have the highs if you don't have the lows and WHEN they win it will be that much sweeter. Mets fans have character, Yankee fans are just assholes.I left out the Yankee fans are assholes part.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I woke up feeling kinda bummed that I have just 10 more regular season games to watch this season. I always slink into an offseason depression, so I perked up after knowing I have a Mets game to watch tonight, even though they've lately just made me drink and swear more. We're in first place. And Scott Olsen's pitching against us tonight. And BK Kim tomorrow.Things are okay.

Guest Kid Carsey Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I've been addicted to various forms of unrequited love since I was an adolescent -- it's a fascinating subject -- the Mets are just an extension of this for me.A win or two over the weekend ain't gonna do it for me, I won't be happyuntil they sign on the dotted line and we know we're in the playoffs.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 A win or two would do it for me if it's accompanied by a Philadelphia loss or two.As long as the magic number keeps moving we're fine. In the last seven or eight days, we've only had one day where the number dropped. And that's the problem. We're running out of days.It has to drop by 9 in ten days.We had been at a point where it had to drop by 11 in 18 days.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I got my sport hating wife into the Mets this season and she will watch the games on and off with me and really gets into the game, she's not too happy with me for getting her to care about the Mets, thinks they are absolutely infuriating.A few months ago I would explain to her why the Mets couldn't win every game and now I am trying to explain what's going on with them right now,the different possibilities and consequences of failure, explaining all this to a novice is quite hard but fun.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Probably shouldn't get into this sort of territory, but I'm thinking you must have the hottest, most tempestuously fueled marriage in New York.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I wouldn't say that the Mets are unlikeable. I think they're highly likable. They're just playing poorly, which is frustrating. Very frustrating.I don't know, maybe my mind is elsewhere right now, but I just have this unshakable optimism about this team. As bad as they are right now, I'm confident they'll be in the postseason and that they'll do well once it begins.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 We've been through this with Valentine's Metzers.

Guest holychicken Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I need something for when they win that is the opposite of hurting my hand by smashing inanimate objects when they lose.Maybe like spontaneous regeneration al la Hayden Panettiere . . .

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Yeah, but the indestructible cheerleader is still plenty cute.I've gotten to a point in my life where I get far more pleasure from a Mets win than I get pain from a Mets loss. I'm able to shrug off the losing seasons and enjoy the hell out of seasons like 2006.So this freefall isn't causing me the angst that it would have, say, twenty years ago. But having said that, this still sucks like crazy. I feel like there's a little cloud following me around. A nagging buzz in my head that there's a disaster going on. I can't just wash my hands of this whole mess, as much as I'd like to.At least it hasn't made me surly or short-tempered. Years ago, it might have. If the Mets do end up somehow winning the 2007 World Series, I guess this experience will make the ending all the sweeter. But I think I'm more likely to end up with an October with no baseball excitement, and early bed times.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 There's still a part of me that burns when I think about the end of the '85 season. That was 22 years ago, and we even won the World Series the next year. And still it burns me to think of Orosco giving up a HR to Cesar Cedeno, Aguilera unable to finish off the sweep in Busch, and the F'in Cardinals(tm Lenny Dykstra) celebrating on that final Saturday. I can't imagine how long I'll carry it with me if they blow this one.

Unfortunately I'm not as evolved.Few years back, losses would really eat away at me to the point where they really did effect me in other areas of my life - surly, short-tempered, etc. - After realizing it I made it a point to try to not be SO involved/invested that it effects my personality.I've gotten better but apparently Yancy's a few years ahead of me.This last week hasn't helped much either.
Guest Rotblatt Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I feel a little like an abused spouse: I'll resolve to stop letting myself get into these situations--to just get up and walk away--but one sad, imploring look from those big blue eyes later, I find myself making excuses for him, and before you know it, I'd right back in the thick of it. Sigh.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 This is a great thread.

I used to take losses more easily. When you're young, you think your indestructible and immortal, and a loss today will be followed by a win tomorrow.but as the days and years go by, my sense of creeping mortality makes me LESS patient, not MORE patient, with the pain of loss. And no amount of victory salves the wound anymore. so, why do i do it? The same reason a junkie does. Even though the highs aren't nearly as good as they used to be, and the lows make him physically sick, and in fact the veins are starting to collapse, he keeps looking for his next fix, because addiction is one tough bitch.
Guest cooby Guests Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 AH! Those of you who remember 1973 have got to be loving this as much as I do.My Phillie fan friend Jason has been telling me for weeks (about the Phillies) "They're gonna choke"Today he was walking around with a big smile on his face and I told him he looked like he was starting to believe. I want the Mets to win this for my dad.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 8 unearned runs. Whatever.

Guest cooby Guests Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I really really really miss having my dad to talk about the pennant race with. Jason has been an unwitting blessing to me because he is always ready to talk baseball! He's even younger than my daughter so he doesn't even remember the Phillies good years.I guess he's more of a surrogate son than a surrogate dad though
