stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Hell maybe even have the Marlins who are 4 back pass the Mets and drop them to 4th in the division.I'm deadly serious, if anything is going to give this team a serious kick in the ass, which they so richly deserve, maybe that will do it, fall out of first place for the first time since the second day of the 2006 season. This team is playing like it's entitiled to October Baseball when in reality they are tied in the win column, 1 game overall, and about 2 games off the pace for the WC slot. The season isn't doomed, but maybe, just maybe a fall from first would give this team a freaking shot of Adrenaline to retake 1st and have that season that supposedly is ours. Its easy to say "Ya Gotta Believe" and quote Bluto Blutarksy if you think your team has a bit of life and spark in them, but right now it's nothing. I think the only thing left is for the Mets to be shown that NOTHING is for granted.Boy, this team historically doesn't do well in these "down to the wire" years do they? What 73 and 99 I think are the only times the Mets actually came out on top in a "not decided untill last week" of the season type of race.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I don't know if they were passed in the standings by Atlanta and Phillie that they would ever recover from that, somehow Delgado and Beltran need to get a hot streaks and perhaps that will spark the rest of them, hitting being contagious and all that.....course it's not just those two that suck.

I'm out of "staying positive" things to say at this point, who knows maybe that might work.]Boy, this team historically doesn't do well in these "down to the wire" years do they? And we know what kind of effect that'll have on this team.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I tell you, Steve's secretly a Braves fan.No, I'm perfectly happy in first place, thank you. Think the Yankees wouldn't rather be in first place? Think the Braves are happy they're a few games out, because it keeps them hungry? Hell NO. As long as it reads "GB: --" next to "New York" in the NL East standings, I'm a happy man.

You're not getting Steve at all. He's the truest Mets fan of all. What he's saying is that if the Mets lose 20 in a row, plummetting deep, deep into the cushy confines of last place, that is A Good Thing because it means that this powerhouse will finally be roused, see the error of its ways, and commence playing "Baseball As It Oughta Be!" , "Come Out to Shea!", "Bring your Kids To See Our Kids!!" and any other BS you care to introduce nonsensically into the equation. IOW, it's all good, and Steve's getting out front of all of you! LGM!
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 what any good team needs is to hit the panic button and start pressing.that always works.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 congrats on the dumbest thread title ever. losing more won't help stop the losing.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Fair points. Just my personal frustrations coming out I guess. Just reaching thinking that a dip in the standings will end the "Hey at least we are still in first" mentality and cause for Omar to pull the trigger on some deals.Put it this way, when I see the Mets in Chicago first weekend of August, I really don't want it to be the Mets battling to stay on the fringe of the race, and the way things appear to be going, I may be drowning my sorrows rather than drinking in celebration.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 If and when the Mets start dropping in the standings, I don't imagine you'll be saying "Hoo-ray! This is great!"

Guest Kid Carsey Guests Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I have to admit, I've come to admire Rogers' online mettle -- it's a trait I have sorely lacked on message boards over the years.Tell him to go play in traffic and he almost always comes back at you witha (borrowing from the definition of mettle) certain quality of character and tem-perament.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I think it's irrelevant that the Mets (or then-Mets) have only won two down-to-the-wire races. Such races are fraught with peril for anybody involved in one.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 how many have they lost?how does that compare with other teams?
