nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 no Met game on memorial day seems like gross negligence on the part of the schedule makers.how coula team have off on what is essentially an automatic near sellout day? (at least at Shea)
Guest sharpie Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Also odd that the MFYs are playing a night game in Toronto leaving New York baseball-less on Memorial Day.
Guest attgig Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I remember that being the case for the past couple of years. no baseball in NY on memorial day. dunno what that's all about. Maybe those other cities need the NY draw to get more people into their seats, and so ny makes that concession?
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Plus there are only 5 afternoon games total. On a day that used to feature classic style double headers! It might be more of a TV ruling sports thing as the NBA playoff games this weekend; which was traditionally afternoon games in the past, or at the very least a double header with one game in the afternoon and the other game with an early evening start; is now just one game per night with a tip off set around 8:40-9:00.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I don't think they're intentionally sterring games away from NYC, it's just that it's tougher to make a sked that's all clean & tidy these days and the main culprit is inter-league play plus the odd number of divisions and the differeing number of teams within each division. In this case, the wheel turned up us against the Giants this week and the Giants were home on the West coast until late yesterday so I guess they feel that the day-off makes a lot more sense than a game with a quick turnaround.
Guest cooby Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Ah well, gives us more time for planting flowers and picnics
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Toronto gets a home game on an American holiday. Good planning. I bet Toronto is playing at Anaheim on Canada Day if they follow the same logic/
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 A few years back, I recall ESPN and ESPN 2 showing three games a piece on Memorial Day-- this year, none.

The host(s) said that they had mentioned the absence of baseball in NY on Memorial Day to Selig last year and he said he would remedy that this year.Guess baseball fans in New York are less important to him than baseball fans in Toronto.Later

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I hate off days when the team is on a hot streak.

nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 I don't even care that the game isn't in NY (though either the Mets or yankees should be here on a holiday) I'm annoyed that there is no Met game at all to watch
Batty31 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I forgot there wasn't a game today and kept checking the TV listings. I thought it was odd there wasn't a game on Memorial Day as well! All the local news channels were showing highlights from yesterday's game since there was nothing else to talk about!
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Well, at least the Yankees lost again. Toronto beat them 7-2 behind a dominant performance from right hander Dustin McGowan. The victory was McGowan's first as a starter since August 9th, 2005. Entering Monday's outing vs. the Yankees, McGowan (1-2) was 1-7 with a 7.52 ERA in 14 career starts for Toronto. The Red Sox keep doing their best to bury the Yankees. Boston defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 5-3. Unfortunately, the Braves refused to follow the script as they defeated the slumping Milwaukee Brewers 2-1. The Brewers rolled into Shea for their three game series with the Mets on May 11th with the best record in baseball. Since that time they have gone 4-13 and have dropped their last six games.

DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Trivia for today's game-less threads:Who is the only player in MLB history to hit a home run in innings 1-16?
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 uh... Frank Thomas. Either one.Seriously... is this a total guessing game or is a clue in order?
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 I think maybe one clue would have been best!

DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 I thought of using "his Godson will visit Shea this week" but assumed that was too easy.
