Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Returning to a game that has never been won, guess the Player to Be Named Later that the Mets will give up for Guillermo Mota.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 j/kThat was based on a WEEI host suggesting that the when Mets traded David Cone to the Blue Jays for a PTBNL (not sure if it was Kent or Thompson off hand) that Cone could in fact become the PTBNL in his own trade

I know from Harry Chiti, I just love pointing out that one WEEI host's utter lack of comprehension of the 1992 Met situation. Cone was a salery dumpage and the Mets were not intent on bringing him back in 1993
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 To answer the original question - it may be someone who is currently on the DL, since such players can't be dealt unti they are activated.Or, more likely (since I don't see them dealing one of the current DL crew- Bannister or Pelfrey - for Mota) if a player if optioned to the minors, they can't be recalled for 10 days - Heath Bell fits that bill.If that is the case, why? In my mind, Bell can do what Mota can, and is cheaper.Later
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Are any of the minor league teams in a pennant race? Could be that they don't want to lose somebody for the playoff run but once that's over he can go/
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Sure it can be a minor leaguer -- in fact, I'd be surprised if it weren't.It may just be a PTBNL because they haven't decided on who it'll be yet. Typically the Mets could give the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" a list of several ml-ers and let them choose later on after doing some scouting.I can't believe the bait here would be anything substantial.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Not getting enough guesses.I'm going with Blake Eager.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Sending them Corey Ragsdale would be intersting.Mota was originally a light hitting infielder in the Met organization who was turned into a pitcher by the team he went to.Ragsdale is currently a light hitting infielder in the Mets organization who some folks think should be turned into a pitcher.Just a thought about Mota - for the Mets to get him, he had to have passed through waivers. That means the Red Sox passed on him. That says a lot.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Not to my thinking. He's making a lot of money and pitching poorly. The waiver wires are full of such people, and the Mets didn't bite until the salary came down.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 6-2 2.71 15 saves in 40+ games for Hagerstown this year. I think he's a lefty. (I get him confused with another reliever on that staff.)EDIT: If he's the one, I'd be ok with that.If that's your guess, not a bad choice.Later

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Thanks OO, that's a pretty decent team of PtBNL.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 How could this happen?,from the Slate article in the link OO posted.]In 1962, the New York Mets traded backup catcher Harry Chiti to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. Who was that player? Harry Chiti, traded for himself.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 From the Wikipedia article on PTBNL:]There are two rules to a PTBNL transaction. The deal must close within a six-month timeframe following the conclusion of the rest of the trade, and the player must change leagues. Because of these two rules there have been some interesting circumstances. In 1962, when Harry Chiti was traded by the New York Mets to the Cleveland Indians for a PTBNL, and the teams could not agree on a final deal within the six-month timeframe, the PTBNL was, oddly enough, Henry Chiti. The New York Mets traded him back to Cleveland for himself, in essence to negate the trade altogether with neither side losing or gaining anything.Seems to make enough sense.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 There's basically two types of PTBNLs1) where the teams already know who's being traded but for various reasons can announce it yet (player on DL, roster issues, etc.)2) where the team is given time to decide who they want - usually from a group of playersAnd Chiti was part of #2. The Mets probably dealt Chiti under the guise that Cleveland could give them any player on their ML roster as of a certain date ... at which point Cleveland decides that Chiti wasn't too swift once seen up close and so they sent him when the time came to close the deal.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 ]Kevin Brown, Yankees: In 1990, traded from New York Mets to Milwaukee along with PNL Julio Machado in exchange for PNL Kevin Carmody and Charlie O'Brien. (Named eight days later). He was also a PNL in 1987 when Atlanta sent him to New York in exchange for Terry Blocker.Wrong Kevin Brown! Kevin Dewayne BrownJames Kevin Brown, aka the guy the Blogger was thinking of!I think the other Kevin Brown and the other Pedro Martinez (Pedro A. who also pitched with the Pads) are probably the two most confused "Ones that got away" in Mets history! Okay, I know of only one call to WFAN inquiring how the Mets had Kevin Brown and "let him go?" Sadly the host said he'd check up on it and never gave the answer (that it wasn't the Kevin Brown who was with the Rangers at the time of the phone call)Then again my Dad once turned to me after Magglio Ordonez had a big hit against the Yankees and asked why Ordonez couldn't do that as a Met! So its not just the same complete name sometimes I guess
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Drama all over Metville, as today's the day the trade is scheduled to be completed.

But for a while, that title was held by the Ender/ Endy Chavez confusion.Or when "E.Alfonzo, c" started showing up in recent SF box scores after they released Edgardo. Thank goodness real Mets fans know that Edgardo was never a catcher.was he?Later
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Tick tockThe clock keeps moving a no word yet on the PTBNL.I've sent an email to an Indian-fan friend in Cleveland. I'll let you know when I hear back from him.Later
