Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Newsday reports that with Floyd out, the Mets are asking about Green. He's apparently cleared waivers and so can be traded at any time. He does hold a no-trade clause which prevents him from being dealt to anywhere except the So-Cal teams - but those can often be negotiated. He's owed $9.5mil for next year plus a $2mil buyout in lieu of whatever his '08 contract calls for. Mets supposedly want the Snakes to pick up at least half of the '07 money plus the buyout for '08.No word on what the D'Backs would want in return.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 It would be nice to not have to be as dependent as I feel on Milledge finding himself. But the bounty may be painful.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I've always liked Green...even after his decline. Much better option than Millegde in my opinion.Supposedly good friends with Delgado...and I would imagine LoDuca can vouch for him, so the move probably wouldn't disrupt the clubhouse.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I'm concerned that would make the team too lefty-heavy going forward. Its an ok move for this year, since we have no idea how much Cliff will be able to contribute. But Green's game has declined recently, and I would prefer getting a righty hitter for next year.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Maybe we can get Xavier Nady back.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 With Arizona only 1.5 games out in the West would they really want to move Green?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 The supposedly have a lot of prospects ready for the majors, and may be wishing to open up a spot for one of them. Green isn't exactly burnin' it up.And the fact that thyy're still in the race makes me think they wouldn't want prospects back - maybe an experienced starter like Traschell?Later
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 62 they may have prospects ready for the majors but if you were the GM wouldn't you stick with a proven vet rather than throw a young prospect in a pennent race or a WC race?

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Author Posted August 13, 2006 Jenkins, like Green, has a contract for next year, meaning you'd want the other club to get a bit creative before you'd even consider that one. He's apparently been benched in Milwaukee leading to the speculation that he'd be available.Preston Wilson is another new consideration. He's on only a 1-year contract and has been DFA'd by the Astros. He'll almost surely be traded somewhere in the next 10 days.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 ]D-Backs' Green Snakesinto discussion WASHINGTON - The Mets have spent plenty of green putting this year's NL-East leading team together. It's possible they could add a little more green to the roster. The East Valley (Ariz.) Tribune reported that the Diamondbacks planned to approach outfielder Shawn Green to waive his no-trade clause to be dealt to the Mets.A Met insider suggested that while the deal is "out there," it is not close to happening.Green, who will make $9.5 million next year and has a mutual option of $10 million for 2008, told the paper that he would seriously weigh the move if and when it happens."I'd have to consider it, if it is something that comes to fruition," said Green, who played with Carlos Delgado in Toronto, and, according the paper, had Delgado in his wedding party. "There has been speculation all season. I don't pay attention to it."If the deal did happen, Green, who has 10 home runs, 49 RBI and is hitting .281 this season, would be an upgrade in right, as rookie Lastings Milledge has struggled since he was recalled after Xavier Nady was shipped to Pittsburgh http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/443332p-373386c.html

Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I've always had a soft spot for Shawn Green - I wouldn't be unhappy if he were to join the Mets (so long as we didn't have to give up anything major for him).
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Preston Wilson is being cut loose by Houston. There's no forward commitment other than a team option following this year.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 IIRC Wilson has always hit well at Shea, and the Mets could use an experienced righty hitting outfielder. I don't know how he'd feel coming here now that Mookie isn't in the organization any more. But he's certainly worth a shot.Later
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I like the karmic possibilities of having a Wilson playing on a post-season Mets squad. Does Bob Stanley have a son pitching on any of the AL contenders?
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 When's the waiver-trade deadline?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2006 Author Posted August 18, 2006 You can make trades up til the final day of the season (Bosox & Mike Stanton last year) but a player who's not on the roster by Aug 31 is not eligible for post-season play.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Reggie Sanders: Plan B?]The word around baseball is that outfielder Reggie Sanders cleared waivers earlier this month but pitcher Mark Redman did not. Teams are prohibited from openly discussing the matter. If true, it means the Royals can trade Sanders, 38, to any team over the seasons remaining weeks. The Mets are believed to have some interest if they fail to pry Shawn Green from Arizona.I'd rather not. There is nothing Sanders can offer the Mets that Preston Wilson couldn't, and Wilson would have come cheaper in both the wallet and farm system. I'd like for them to replace Ledee or Tucker with a more capable hitter, but Reggie seems to have lost his power while posting a K/BB ratio similar to Milledge's, plus he'd be under contract for $5 million next year.Pass.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 I don't disagree, but we can't be comparing him to Wilson. That ship has sailed.Only relevant ships now are the ones still at the dock.

I referenced Wilson more to make a point that it would be seem unlikely for the Mets to go after Sanders, but my context was all screwy.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Progress made in Green discussions, as Green agrees to waive his No Trade clause.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 $8-$9M/yr for a .280 / 20hr / 80rbi /.825 OPS RFer is pretty steep. Still, i'd rather have him than Ricky Ledee, and if he doesn't cost us much in actual prospects, its okay with me.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Green hasn't done much since coming to the Mets,Gary wondered last night if Green has to show Willie something down the stretch to be the starting right fielder in the playoffs.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 I'd start Endy over Green.
