Pink Bats

The saddest part about the Mets wielding pink bats this weekend is that we're now precluded from making fun of MFY players (who are doing the same thing) with pink bats.

On Monday, when the back pages are full of pictures of Jeter and his wittle pink bat, I'll only be able to look mournfully at them and sigh.

Much like A-Rod when he and Jeter are alone in the locker room.

Hey-ho!

Very nice, WP.

Looking at that picture--even with it all dolled up--still makes me angry.

Had the umps not overruled the "safe" call, I think I probably would've had a stroke, broken my tv, or both.

What a douchebag.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the pink bats are bit too much. If they want to do ribbons, or patches, or hell, even pink hats, I think I'd be ok. But to me, extending it to the actual equipment is going too far. No pink bats, no pink balls, no pink gloves.

And I realize it's for a good cause (if it wasn't I would be up in arms) and so it's not really a big deal. But I just don't see why you have to mess with the equipment.

You could still sign and sell and donate to charity without the items being pink. Hell, I would pay more for a brown or black bat than a pink one anyway.

"i just bought Beltran's bat in an auction."

"Which one, the pink one?"

"Yeah."

"Dude, that's the wussiest looking bat I've ever seen."

="Edgy DC"]I worry that perhaps there's some Trojan Horse stealth going on here.

By allowing promotion for an unimpeachable charity onto the field and equipment during game play --- ribons on the jersey last year, bats this year --- they're softening up fan resistance for Nextel logos on the field/uniforms/equipment in the near future.

Remember the (thankfully) aborted attempt to put Spiderman on the bases as a promo for that movie? You may be right, Edgy. But right now I'd give them the benefit of the doubt - they're doing something for a worthy charity. Doing something similar is still over the horizon. But your comment is worthy of the prediction forum. And I wouldn't bet against it happening some time in the future.

As for other stuff in this thread, I heard that only about 50 pink bats were made for this Sunday. So I wouldn't think anyone has a spare in case one gets shattered.

And, as for the Piazza comment. When I wrote (and posted here) "Pardon Me Boy, Is That Piazza in a Tutu?" I was once again ahead of my time. But I don't think my song parody mentioned that it was pink.

Later

I thought it was 50 players with 400 pink bats made, but I'm not sure...

="metsmarathon"]i'll bet mike piazza alreday has one...

great idea, too.

pink can be a manly color too.

One of the greatest pro-wrestlers of all time made pink his trademark...

Then again, maybe rolling around with another sweaty oiled up guy in a pre-determined exhibition isn't exactly "manly" in the first place!

Anyway, here is Bret "The Hit Man" Hart

Why doesn't MLB just use pink balls all day?

(a moan falls over the crowd)

Scott Rolen refuses to use a pink bat, and says his mom understands.

Heh, true, habit I guess, Mike Easler and Don Mattingly were others that I know off hand with that nickname and usually they had "The" before "Hit Man"

Or at least Donnie Baseball's usage only comes from a Nike poster...

Maatingly's "nickname" was as contrived as they come. That it came off the back of a former teammate should have been enough for him to disassociate from the usage.

Plus in the poster he's not even sporting his familar mustache and stubble!

And upon further review, no "The" on his nickname, ditto with Mike Easler!

Although his wikipedia entry does say "The Hitman" but then again with Wiki entries being whatever someone types they are bound to have scores of un checked facts!

Converse, also. Probably sold more than a few of those dumb posters, though.

I did a google image search and came up empty on Easler "Hit Man" product images BTW! A bunch featuring Mattingly's sig (forged or not who knows) with "Hit Man" underneath

Funny because I always associate "Donnie Baseball" with Mattingly more, has a nice "Donnie Brasco" and "Teddy Ballgame" combo.

Although it was way too corny when a host of a talk radio show used that nickname to call Don LaGreca of 1050 ESPN Radio "Donnie Hockey" and was told by Don himself to go with "Donnie Pucks" if he wanted to call LaGreca anything!

Tom Keegan when talking to LaGreca previewing a Devil playoff series, it was clear LaGreca wanted no part of a nickname and Keegan's partner Wally Mathews suggested "Donnie Pucks" instead!

Someone put up a running talley of who has been swinging the bat?

Curiously I don't see ARod using it, granted it was the bot of 7th

Delgado,Wright, and Nady swung em, at least their 1st time up.
Wore the sweat bands too.

Reyes has double pink wrist bands on, as does the home plate ump at the Phils game.
