POTG Poll Totals

I am compiling the POTG Poll totals for the season. I decided to count any nomination as a single point. This is to allow players that often turn in good performances, only to be outdone by a teammate, to garner recognition for their contribution. Also, this format seems to overlook relievers. Their contributions do not often garner them POTG votes. So the POTG Poll Points are the sum of the nominations for the player and the number of votes garnered by the player.

This is also my first attempt at making a table in HTML code. So I hope this works. Without further ado, I present the POTG Poll Standing for all games through 4/16/06.

Damn! So close and yet so far. Do any of the more computer literate (Yancey, KC, Edgy, et al) know why the table went under my signature rather than with the body of the message? I'm clueless.

Also, is it always so tedious to have to type in all the line of code like I had to or is there a short cut that I'm not yet aware of?

Okay, this thread is seriously messed up. I will fix it when someone can give me a clue what I have done wrong.

Or one of the admins can fix it when they get a chance.

I finally figured out my error. I forgot to close the table formatting with (/Table)*

*where <> is substituted for ( ) above.

This is a new counting method, isn't it? It seems that the scoring will be influenced by the number of people who vote, which can be independent of what happens on the field. A game that 25 people vote for will be weighted more heavily than a game that 12 people vote for.

I truthfully don't know how it was done in the past. The polls died out last year and we went exclusively with the Schaeffer POTG system. I understand what you are saying and have noticed such deviations in the voting occurring at times. Some games, there have only been 12 votes and other games there have been as many as 27 votes cast. The voter turn out definitely seems to be higher in Mets victories.

I'm not sure how to alleviate the problem, but I'm open to suggestions. The best I can think of at present is to divide the total number of points each player receives for a given game by the total number of points available for that particular game. If anyone has a better idea, I'm willing to listen.

I'm curious to see how the results of the polls and the Schaeffer voting compare over the course of the season.

shouldn't it be just % of vote per game, added up for each game?

or, more simply, a count of how many times a given player wins a game?

or, more complicatedly, you could set it up similar to MVP voiting, where the top getter gets, say 5 points, and the lowest gets 1, depending, of course, on if you have 5 nominees for a game.

the total number of votes per game should remain a constant.

When I did this and Edgy before me I believe points were tallied in the following manner:

Points for nomination: 1 point for position player, 3 points for pitchers
ex. players nominated for last night's game
Floyd - 1 point
Nady - 1 point
Reyes - 1 point
Sanchez - 3 points
Trachsel - points

Percentage of votes converted into a decimal number.
ex. Tom Glavine gets 55% of the vote so he gets 5.5 points

Bonus of 1 point to the player who wins the most votes.

An additional bonus of 1 point for a player who wins.

An example of how to tally everyone up using the 4/20 game v. the Padres.

Who was last night's POTG?
Delgado 2-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
5%
5% [ 1 ]
Franco 1-1, HR, R, RBI
50%
50% [ 10 ]
Matsui 1-4, HR, R, RBI, & a sweet turn on a DP
20%
20% [ 4 ]
Reyes 2-5, R, SB
5%
5% [ 1 ]
Trachsel 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 2 BB
20%
20% [ 4 ]
Total Votes : 20

Delgado: 1 + 0.5 = 1.5
Franco: 1 + 5 + 1 = 7
Matsui: 1 + 2 = 3
Reyes: 1 + 0.5 = 1.5
Traschel: 3 + 2= 5

Of course you may do it any way you like but this formula works pretty well to account for waxing & waning of voter participation and to correct a bias against pitching.

Willets, thanks for the explaination of the scoring methodology from years past. I will make changes to my spreadsheet and recalculate the points. I will post the new standings at the end of the month when the Player of the Month is honored.

I'm not sure that there is as strong a bias against pitchers as people believe. At least for starting pitchers, if they perform well they often garner the lion's share of the votes cast for a game. Glavine, Bannister, and Martinez are all in the top 6 vote getters at this early juncture. It is the relievers that often fail to get their due in this format.

For historical consistency, I will follow the same basic formula as in the past.

I recalculated the point totals utilizing a slight variation of the example Willets Point gave me earlier in this thread. The scores closely resemble the percentage of the total votes cast in all the polls. I think there exists a mild bias in favor of the pitchers due to the 3 to 1 advantage for a nomination, but we'll see how it plays out over the course of the season.

I'm interested to see how the results of the polls will compare to the Schaefer voting during the course of the season.

Edited: I forgot Chris Woodward the first time through.

I'm a little surprised by a couple of the results. Heilman in particular seems too low, especially considering who's ahead of him -- ie. Franco, whose April contributions were basically one heroic homer, and a couple of hits here and here.

At a glance, it seems that the Schaefer method acknowledged more players, and was friendlier to Reyes, Floyd, Wagner, Heilman, and Lo Duca, but less friendly to Castro, Matsui, and Franco.

I agree, but I just tally the votes as recorded by the members. I will likely play around with the scoring system a little in my spare time.

Yancy - "At a glance, it seems that the Schaefer method acknowledged more players, and was friendlier to Reyes, Floyd, Wagner, Heilman, and Lo Duca, but less friendly to Castro, Matsui, and Franco."

I think some of the discrepancies occur for the following reasons:
1. With only one vote to cast, it generally goes to the player having the best game. Generally the player getting the most votes in a poll is the same player getting the most Schaeffer points on the ballots for that game.

2. Being able to vote for only the most outstanding player, there is no room to recognize other players that made lesser (yet still important) contributions to the Mets cause in the game. As a result fewer players get recognition. For instance, Reyes was second on the team in nominations with 10, yet he only received 13 votes for the month. Floyd was nominated 5 times, yet he received only six votes all month.

3. One outstanding performance (as in the case of Julio Franco and Chad Bradford) can lead to a landslide victory in which the player garners virtually all of the votes registered. One or two dominant performances, can significantly boost a players postion in the overall standings. Franco received only two nominations, yet he received 14 POTG votes and won the balloting in one game. Chad Bradford won the balloting in the only game he was nominated in.

4. Relievers get robbed in this format. For instance, Wagner received only one POTG vote in the month of April, while Heilman received no POTG votes.

Essentially, the Schaeffer voting better recognizes all the players that made significant contributions in the game and spreads the love. The polls are a one shot deal that essentially recognize only the player viewed as having the most outstanding game.

There may gave beeb another reason fir Wagner to get just one vote

I've been on the road quite a bit the past two weeks. I'll try to get the results through the end of May tabulated and posted this weekend.

I would appreciate Squid archiving all the Polls through the end of May if he gets the chance.

I know I've been putting this off. I'm not as sophisticated as Yancey, so I do all the tabulating by hand. A time consuming process that I hate, but I will finish through June and post soon. Promise.

I appreciate the bump. I often tend to procrastinate on tasks that I prefer not to do.

Tallying for June POTG Beer Polls Player of the Month is now completed. I will post the results in table form tomorrow.

Also have YTD results through 6/30/06 calculated and will post tomorrow.
