Why are the numbers for July alone higher than the year-to-date numbers?

Something appears amiss.

I don't mean to nitpick, by the way. I realize you're doing a lot of this by hand, and I know how hard that is.

None of this will likely make sense, but I will try to explain my methodology as best I can.

The player scores are a static reflection of their overall accumulation of points in relation to the total number of votes cast within that period of time (year to date or single month). It is not a steady accumulation of points amassed. That is why players such as Jorge Julio and Kaz Matsui (and in the future Xavier Nady) slide down the chart when they no longer are accumulating points. Their overall contribution to the team for the year becomes a lesser ratio over time.

In attempt to clarify, a player accumulates points for a nomination (1 pt./nomination for position players and 2 pts./nomination for pitchers), winning the POTG vote (1 pt.), and votes cast for them. The sum of these numbers represents the total number of points amassed by the player. To get the points listed in the chart the players points are divided by the total number of votes cast. Since the number of votes cast is constantly changing, the scores of the players vary. Ultimately, the actual number next to the players name is representative of the voters perception of their contribution to the team in relation to the overall body of work for all the players during that span of time (monthly or YTD). It is not representative of a set, hard number.

For any given segment of time (POTM or POTY)

Nominatin Pts. + Poll Victories + Poll Votes = POTM(Y) Poll Points accumulated

POTM(Y) Poll Points Accumulated / (Total Votes cast)(100) = POTG Points in Chart for the specified Month or YTD

In retrospect, I should have divided the points amassed by each player by the total number of points amassed by all players, that way their score would represent the percentage of the overall points accumulated for that specified period. Unfortunately, I figured this out later in the season and I'm not fond of recalculating all the scores for each month and YTD to reflect that score. Particularly since, having done so with the YTD scores, the order of standings remains unchanged (only the number representations change).

I don't get it, but I appreciate the work involved, and the polls themselves...thanks!

I recalculated the player YTD scores through July 31 to reflect the percentage of points amassed versus the total points awarded. Hopefully, seeing the player standings as a percentage will make it easier to understand the relationship between respective players.

It's not the number that matters as much as the relative positions of the players in relation to one another.
