metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Probably nothing will happen but Guillen is mouthing about Pedro getting hurt.]Pedro Guillen II: It's must-see TVBY ANTHONY RIEBERNewsday Staff WriterPedro Martinez has said for two days that he considers Thursday's bench-clearing incident with Jose Guillen over.Guillen made it clear Friday that he doesn't. It could lead to some tense moments when Martinez pitches in Washington on Wednesday. Guillen told The Washington Post on Friday that he believes Martinez was throwing at him intentionally when he hit him twice in the Mets' 10-5 win at Shea Stadium. He said Martinez is "going to get hurt" if he continues to plunk batters."Pitching inside, that's part of the game," the Washington outfielder said. "But throwing at people, that's different. And that's what he was doing. He's trying to intimidate people. And sooner or later, he's going to get hurt. I can guarantee you that."After getting hit on the elbow in the fifth inning, Guillen walked toward the mound, yelling and pointing at Martinez with his bat. He was restrained by plate umpire Ted Barrett and Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca as Martinez stood his ground. The benches and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown.Martinez denied Thursday and again Friday that he was throwing at Guillen, who entered the game with a .419 career average (13-for-31) against him. Martinez has hit Guillen, a fellow Dominican, five times.Asked about Guillen's comments yesterday, Martinez said: "I have no reaction. I'm not talking about that anymore."There was plenty for Martinez to not react to.Guillen, who once was suspended by the Angels after a confrontation with manager Mike Scioscia and later traded to Washington, wasn't as vociferous in the immediate aftermath of the incident Thursday, even smiling as he talked to reporters. But he was much more vocal Friday in Houston, where the Nationals played the Astros.Asked if he was intimidated by Martinez, Guillen said: "You think he can intimidate me? I'm not afraid of no one when I cross those white lines. And let me tell you something: We'll see on Wednesday night how tough he is. I want him to come in there [pitch inside]. And we'll see if he's that tough like he thinks he is."Guillen also told the Post: "We're two competitors. But I think this is going to need to stop, and I'm going to make sure I put a stop that. You know what? If I get hit again, it's going to get real ugly if he's pitching."Referring to Martinez's assertion that Guillen shouldn't have walked toward him with the bat still in his hands, Guillen said: "He thinks I was going out there with the bat? Why would I need a bat for a 150-pound guy when I'm 230?"Martinez, who is no stranger to brushback wars, said Friday he doesn't see the need to seek out Guillen or speak to him."It's a non-issue," Martinez said. "In my heart, I know that I didn't mean to do anything like that. If he doesn't want to understand it or anyone doesn't want to understand it, then it's fine. Let it go. It's over."Guillen said he and Martinez had been friends but that he considers the friendship over. On Friday, Martinez said: "If he feels the relationship is broken over that, I shouldn't feel too bad about it. It wasn't that strong then."Because neither Martinez nor Guillen was ejected, it was unclear whether either faces a suspension or fine for his actions, although Guillen might face the wrath of baseball because of Friday's comments.Nationals reliever Felix Rodriguez and manager Frank Robinson were ejected after Rodriguez hit Lo Duca with a pitch in the eighth inning. Washington first baseman Nick Johnson also was hit twice in the game.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Pedro could lose a leg and probably still weigh more than 150.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Turns out I was blacked out by ESPN for the opening day game and Perdos debut for-get this-they say here In South Jersey I fall under the Washington Nationals market.Even tho they are hundreds of miles away (Phil & NY are closer),Comcasts feed is out of Delaware and they black it out from the source. They say its just an unfortunate flukey thing.Fargin bastages---thats rediculous.Could be worse tho- I only will lose games with the Nats.I dont see ESPN airing many Nat games as the season gets deep..

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 btw, rotation sets up as:Tues - BannisterWed - PedroThurs - ZambranoFri - TraxSat - GlavineZambrano's had both the flu and his hammy problem so they're using the rainout as an excuse to bump his start for a few more days.Innuresting that Bannister keeps his slot.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I guess I can deal with a postseason rotation of Martinez, Glavine, Trachsel.

Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Fairly pointless AP article NEW YORK -- After a series in New York that included seven hit batters, Major League Baseball is telling the Mets and Washington Nationals to be on their best behavior when they meet for three more games starting Tuesday."Just play ball," is the message being sent to the teams, Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for on-field operations, said Sunday night."Blowin' over? Not with eight guys getting hit. That never blows over," Mets outfielder Cliff Floyd said Sunday. "I just feel like it needs to stop."There were five batters hit last Thursday night and two in the previous game. Six of the batters hit were Washington players -- and the Nationals weren't happy about it.Rookie right-hander Brian Bannister hit Alfonso Soriano in the back of the helmet. Jose Guillen was plunked three times, including twice by Pedro Martinez.Guillen pointed his bat at Martinez and charged halfway to the mound Thursday after he was nailed for the second time in the game. The angry slugger was held back by plate umpire Ted Barrett and Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca as the benches and bullpens emptied. Players ran onto the field quickly, but no punches were thrown."I know how to take care of it, don't worry," Guillen said with a smile after the game, then referred to the rest of the season series. "I'm going to make sure I play in all the games he's in. ... I want him to throw inside. Now I want him more than ever."Lo Duca had his own take on all the bluster."I think a lot of people say a lot of stuff when people are not in their face, so we'll see what happens when we're out on the field," he said Sunday after New York's 3-2 victory over Florida.Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson also was hit twice, once by Martinez. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to pitch Wednesday, the second game of the series in Washington."Hopefully, that's behind us. You don't want to get into a beanball contest with anybody," Mets third baseman David Wright said. "That doesn't do you any good. They have to understand -- Pedro has to pitch inside to be effective. There shouldn't be any bad blood. You can't worry about those kinds of things. I'm not concerned about it."Watson said Steve Palermo, an umpiring supervisor, would tell umpires for the upcoming series at RFK Stadium to be on the lookout for trouble."We will probably do what's normal after a confrontation like happened last series, and that's called a 'heads up,"' Watson said. "Steve Palermo will send out an e-mail to the crew and let them know what had taken place so they have an idea of what's going on."After the teams were warned Thursday night, Nationals reliever Felix Rodriguez was ejected when he hit Lo Duca with first base open in the eighth inning. Washington manager Frank Robinson also was tossed from the game by umpires."Rick Reed tells me all our hitters were hit with changeups. I know they didn't all get hit with changeups. My eyesight is good," Robinson said Thursday night. "I'll tell you one thing, Pedro knows what he's doing out on the mound."But most of the Mets didn't sound worried about any more trouble this week."We won't allow ourselves to be distracted. We're going to keep our focus on winning ballgames," said 47-year-old reserve Julio Franco, who played peacemaker during the near fight. "We don't want anybody on this ballclub to get in a brawl or get suspended or get hurt."And manager Willie Randolph gave the exact answer baseball is looking for."We're just going to play the game," he said.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2006 Author Posted April 10, 2006 ]Nats' Robinson, Rodriguez suspended THE ASSOCIATED PRESSApril 10, 2006, 2:13 PM EDTHOUSTON -- Washington reliever Felix Rodriguez was suspended for three games and Nationals manager Frank Robinson for one for their roles in last week's game against the New York Mets in which five batters were hit by pitches.Rodriguez and Robinson were both ejected at Shea Stadium last Thursday after the reliever hit Paul Lo Duca with a pitch in the eighth inning. Rodriguez and Robinson also were fined, as was outfielder Jose Guillen. Robinson served his suspension during Monday's series finale against Houston. The Nationals were to return home after the game for Tuesday's home opener -- against the Mets.Bench coach Eddie Rodriguez ran the team Monday."I wanted to get it out of the way," Robinson said. "That way, it's not hanging out there."Rodriguez's suspension was to begin Wednesday unless the players' association files an appeal.A total of seven batters were hit during the series with the Mets.Guillen, hit three times, pointed his bat at Pedro Martinez and approached the mound Thursday after Martinez nailed him for the second time. Plate umpire Ted Barrett and Lo Duca held back Guillen as the benches and bullpens emptied. Players ran onto the field quickly, but no punches were thrown. Both dugouts were warned before Rodriguez plunked Lo Duca with first base open.Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for on-field operations, met with Robinson Saturday in Houston. He said the fines and suspensions were automatic since both dugouts received warnings.Robinson wanted to avoid serving his punishment during the Nationals' upcoming three-game series with the Mets.Robinson wasn't planning to talk about last week's problems with his team before they played the Mets again."I don't think I'm going to tell them they have to be careful or anything like that. They should know that," Robinson said. "I still think we have to go out and play like we would play normally."Robinson hopes Rodriguez's suspension is reduced on appeal."What you really want to accomplish is to have your side heard," Robinson said. "What we will benefit from right now is we will have his services for now, until the hearing itself."Guillen has been hit five times by Martinez in his career. Robinson said he would talk to Guillen about curtailing his emotions this week -- especially if he faces Martinez, scheduled to pitch on Wednesday."He'll listen to anything I tell him," Robinson said. "But I don't know how someone will react in the heat of the battle. All I can do is reason with him and tell him what I think." Subscribe to Newsday home delivery | Article licensing[code:1][/code:1]
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Any other MLB.TV'ers getting the feed, but seeing only a black Direct TV looking screen that reads "For ordering information, please call customer service, ext. 721."? I was in the middle of the SNY Lo Duca interview when it changed to this.Edit: It's back now. So far, I think MLB.TV has been crap this year compared to previous years.
duan Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 so any predictions as to who they'll throw at?Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Floyd or Pedro?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2006 Author Posted April 12, 2006 Good question Duan, I think if the Mets chase Armus early a RP might do the deed, if it's a close game probably nothing happens.

duan Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 someone'll get hit - the way Guillen's gone on it'd be astonishing if they didn't. They'll need to hit first so that the warning gets issued and Pedro'll get thrown out if he retaliates. I'm not saying it's right, but I think there's quite a bit of ballplayer machismo tied up in the 'we gotta sort this out' kinda thing.

I know the days off have helped and that tomorrow it will probably be changed with the day after the night, but I like that Willie is not tinkering.
