Reyes at the plate. The Mets are wearing the space-age batting helmets.

Bad helmets. Bad.

Reyes hits one about 390 to center. Flies out.

Matsui would've hit a homer.

ESPN still not carrying the game. They're showing a Duke basketball news conference.

I can only imagine how pissed off I'd be if I didn't have Extra Innings.

I hope that none of us has to rely on ESPN to see this game.

Makes me feel a little better for forgetting to set my VCR.

Paul LoDuca, professional hitter.

Edit: Carlos Beltran, misses fair territory.

LoDuca rolls out to third. Beltran pops to first. Livan is getting squeezed.

A mini-rally (two walks) by Washington ends with Paul LoDuca showing more range behind the dish than I've seen from a Met since maybe John Stearns --- running about 45 feet up the first-base line to field a dribbler by Brian Schneider. He was close enough to underhand the ball to first, anyhow.

Damn, wicked curve by Hernandez --- never had much luck against the Mets by the way --- gets Delgado.

Wright time.

Lets go Mets.....last year on opening day I stayed away from all things Mets so I could watch the game that night on replay, so a friend(MFY fan) calls me to ask if I knew how the game ended, of course I knew by his tone of voice something bad happened.......I begged him to tell me and he did.....shocked I was......so today I will try a different approach and change the Mets luck..

Just remember that players who homer in their first at-bats as Mets usually end up sucking so Delgado striking out is auspicious. At least don't boo him until his 3d at-bat today.

After two innings, no Met has ever reached base in the Hateful Helmet.

I don't think I need say more, so do not ask me to.

MLBTV just went to some old-skool WOR color static.

Xavier Nady gets a rare bad pitch from Livan and gets the first Mets hit of 2006.

Welcome Anderson Hernandez. And he's swinging, moving the runner over to second, but grounding out.

Great initial telecast SNY. I really wanted to watch the September 17, 1986 clincher against Chicago instead of opening day.

If he were still doing Mets games, many Mets fans would have slashed their wrists by now,

SNY Power Truck hit...OPENING DAY GOOD GOD! THEY STILL SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang. Reyes hits a hard liner out to left, but Nady fails to tag.

No biggie, as Soriano had good throwing position, and he likely would've been out.

LoDuca serves a bloop to left center and the Mets take a lead.

LoDuca hits a two-out flailer, Soriano makes no effort and it falls in. Mets 1, Nats 0.

The SNY people are providing commentary because the production truck is still down. But at least we have a picture now. What a spectacular embarrassment.

Good thing Lo Duca is in the #2 hole.
